Maybe the Sox come back around to the Mariners. It would probably cost some prospects, but a deal with Mike Leake and Mallex Smith would give us the extra outfielder we all want plus it would fill out the rotation.

That's gonna be a no on that one. I want nothing to do with Mike Leake and that contract.

If we get Machado for 250 you have to go for Harper. That's 100 million less than the predictions at beginning of this process.

Right now they're around 80. That's a $32M AAV.

If your payroll is only $112M...screw it, go for Harper.

But they don't have the pitching; and they are light on O unless Anderson and Moncada improve; which they may or may not.   The Sox have at least 3 top CF prospects...just not the position to go for a FA.  Jay and Alonso just aren't top shelf talents...by a long shot.   Sox need another year to sort things out.

For once I agree with you. The starting pitching doesn't even have a guy you can legitimately call a 1 or even a 2 starter. I think the offense will be fine with Machado and Eloy added to it . Bullpen probably not playoff caliber either. No really big gun .Just a bunch of guys who can either hit or miss but not hit huge but could miss huge out in the pen.

You do realize the difference between 250/8 and 350/10 is under 4 million a year, right?

The total means nothing here.

You can make those positive claims about every team in the league. If this guy does this, and this guy does this, we got a good one on our hands!!

I appreciate the optimism, but this team has to prove it before they get the benefit of the doubt.

Every team has two former top 5 overall prospects under the age of 24 in their lineup?

Let's just pretend the Sox get both of them. Would you stagger their opt-outs so that way the roster won't be completely stripped in 1 year, or do you line up their opt outs together so if they BOTH take their opt out, you suddenly have $70M or so to instantly spend on whoever the top young FA is that off-season? You basically promise yourself the ability to sign the best FA that offseason.

Stagger them a year apart. Either one gives you $30M+ in cash to retain your own guys or sign someone if they leave.

However, if one of them leaves, our prospects of luring another top FA are probably bad.

The total mea means nothing here.

The early season predictions for machado and Harper were ten year minimum with 12/13 year deals desired. So 8 is an amazing feat even at 32 mil a year...this is prime of career ages we are talking here.

Need legit breakouts from two of Rodon/Lopez/Giolito plus #3 & #4 type performances from Gio & Nova respectively.  I know Balta thinks you need four Cy Young finalists to make the playoffs, but look at the Brewers last year.  A strong lineup and bullpen can help make up for that.  Machado & Pollock could be poor man version’s of Yelich & Cain for us.  Still a long-shot we make the playoffs, but I’d be rolling the dice on that roster next year knowing I still have a boatload or prospects arriving in the coming years.

The White Sox were actually 8th in MLB for quality starts with 74.  Probably the only positive stat we were Top 15 in.

The Brewers were 26th with 51.

The scary part is James Shields had 19.  Lopez had 19, Giolito 15, Rodon 11 and Covey 6.   Fulmer had 2, Santiago 1 and there must have been a "team" QS that's not individually credited.

The difference is the Brewers had at least 7 starters they could count on to hold the game close and get it to the bullpen.  We had, at best, 3 reliables, at any given point in the season.    Pretty much every week, there were 40% of the starts that were borderline disasters.
