At this point, if we give an extra $30 million, how do we know Manny even accepts it? Like Balta has been saying, what needs to happen now is Hahn asking Manny's camp what number they would sign for. Then you negotiate and try to meet in the middle. You don't just throw extra money at him and hope he accepts. It's hard to sit back and wait, but at this point, what other team is going to swoop in and sign him? This is all fun but I'm really not that worried. You ain't turning down 7/230 for 2 for 80, it's a massive offsetting risk. Sox are just above that "eff it" threshold and that's good but they'll have to go up a bit and they know it and machado will have to go down a bit and they know it and all will be well. If the Sox are so frustrated with how this is going down then I can only imagine how frustrated Manny is. This dude knows how good he is. The Sox getting two players who are close to him in the hopes that he maybe takes a little less to come here, especially when everyone knows how much payroll they have available, is ridiculous and to be honest a little insulting to Manny. That being said, I’m just of the mindset that at some point you got to stop fucking around and find a price that works for both sides. If $300M is the magic number, make it over 9 or 10 years and demand any opt-out is after year 4. Ultimately all that matters is we land one of the whales, but no will be ok if they get too cute, overplay their hand, and allow a team to sneak into this process.
