On RLR today, Dave said that the Sox current offer of 7 years, 245-250 million currently has us in the lead for Machado, but his contact told him not to tweet it

I just don’t see why Machado and his agent would only want a 7 year deal? If there are no opt outs he’ll be 32-33. What kind of deal is he really looking at after that?

He elaborated and said he predicts the winning bid to be more like 8/270

It's not about what they want, but what teams will agree to. And hitting the market again at 33 would be a lot better for him than hitting it at 36. It's riskier, but maybe instead of a hypothetical $100 mil over years 8-10, he could sign a new contract from age 33-37 which would pay him $150 mil.

In general or with the Sox? If the Phillies go 10 /$325 I think his prediction is meaningless.

Why would the Phillies LEEROY JENKINS by giving Machado 2 years and $85 mil more than the next highest offer?

My opinion is nobody is going to give Machado at 33 years old a $150 mil deal for 4 years. That would be insane.

Nobody knows what the “highest” bid is right now. It’s all opinions.

If yankees only at 4 years $150M then ya.

No.  7 years and $245M is $35M in average annual value (AAV).  That would be the highest AAV ever given to a player in the history of baseball.  It is not a weak offer, and that has nothing to do with what the Yankees offer is.

I meant season 33-37, which is 5 years. If he's hitting 35-40 homers a year at that point and giving good defense at 3B (even if no longer elite), it's not out of the ream of possibility that the market at that point could give him $30 mil a year. Either way, he'd likely get more AAV for ages 36-37 if he signed 7 then 5 year deals, rather than a 10 and a 2. And a 7 year deal would like give a higher AAV than 10, so he could make more overall if he stays healthy. So it's not *all* bad for him. But yes, he is going to take the best offer overall. We don't know what any teams are really offering, but nothing we know would lead us to believe the Phillies are offering anything close to 10/$325.
