Press ss conference is scheduled for this morning...

“Manny Machado is a generational talent, and we’re ecstatic that he’s chosen to spend his prime years in a San Diego Padres uniform,” Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler and General Partner Peter Seidler said in a statement. “This momentous agreement speaks volumes to the direction of our organization.”

...

Machado, who will receive a $20 million signing bonus within the next month and a $10 million base salary in 2019, is expected to play third base for the Padres. A career .282/.335/.487 hitter, it is also anticipated he will provide an impetus for an offense that last year ranked 28th out of 30 teams in batting average, 30th in on-base percentage and 27th in slugging percentage.

His 23.2 WAR (wins above replacement) ranks seventh in the majors over the past four seasons and is 12.9 higher than the total WAR of the next-highest Padres player (Eric Hosmer) in that span.

Machado, scheduled to make $30 million a year from 2020-28 with the ability to opt out of his contract after five seasons, has played in more games (637) than any other major leaguer and ranks seventh with 142 home runs since the start of the ‘15 season.

Not saying Harper would or would not be worth investing in at this point, but Hahn saying "the money will be spent..." and then hearing the Sox are out on Harper just completely sends the wrong message. At what point are they going to start delivering on what they promise?

Several days later I still feel gutted about missing out on Machado. Huge wasted opportunity to acquire a 26 year old all star for only cash, not even a qualifying offer attached.

Never thought I'd be watching a San Diego Padres press conference jealous of their ability to spend and execute.
