I cannot endorse this statement more highly. Paying Manny Machado way more than our current offers makes complete sense when he might very well put up 40 WAR for us over 10 years, which over that time (and counting inflation) would be worth something like $500 million to this franchise. And frankly, paying $12 million per WAR is something we're used to - we paid more than that in our 2015 and 2016 acquisitions.

In other words, a $500 million dollar deal for Manny Machado could very well be better spending than our last batch of free agent acquisitions, and no one is talking about that kind of money for him. A $300 million deal has a strong chance of being the best contract the White Sox offer for any US Free agent this decade.

Agents wait to find your weakness then exploit it ruthlessly. You have to make it clear that you are not his victim but an earnest suitor. If your money is good the phone will be ringing.

We know almost nothing about the negotiations and most of what has been reported is good news for Sox.  The time to rip the front office isn’t now.  Let’s see what happens.

Another thing... if Machado is so eager to sign somewhere and it’s the Sox fault no deal has been made, why isn’t Machado a Phillie or Padre or Yankee etc.?

I just want to know what 👀 meant, got me all excited for nothing.

Absolutely nothing. All those burner accounts and rumors of the past few days. What a surprise none of them have materialized.

It meant nothing. Bad info, or incomplete info. That's all.

I’m going to wager incomplete info.  I’m still convinced Joc will be a White Sox, but something probably delayed the timing of an announcement.  That could be the Dodgers fan fest this weekend, a pending Realmuto trade, etc.   Too much smoke & too much Hahn cockiness for something not to be happening soon.

I kinda got burned a little for suggesting this on Friday...

The problem is, all the insiders are team insiders.  They know the White Sox and do great work scooping Sox info.  But just as big of a piece to this is Machado’s camp.  There just aren’t many leaks in that side because—ultimately—it’s going to come down to Manny.   Unless he personally leaks info, every insider for every involved team, can only be 50% correct at best.  The other 50 is Manny and only he can complete the puzzle.

Also—the agent war doesn’t help.  They’re playing big time games as well and that’s a whole other layer of unpredictability in this.

Why? They need outfield help no matter what.

Why trade assets for a 2 year player when they have zero chance to win in that window?  Not that they have much of a chance right now with Machado...but at least one construct an "if everything goes right" argument.    They've got OFs on the way.

They have no chance of winning in 2020?

So 4 hours earlier, some guy named Paul Crane said the Padres were close to signing Machado to an 8-year deal with an opt out after 3-years.   He made it sound like it could happen this weekend.    Then a very credible Padres writer for The Athletic, Dennis Lin, said the Padres have not even met with Machado yet and want to get some face time with Machado before becoming more involved with him.   This confirms that Paul Crane is full of shit.    We, including me, need to start ignoring guys like Crane and other insider wannabes as almost all of them don’t have sources and don’t know shit.

Exactly. Jay and Alonso moves will be enough monstrosities if they don’t sign machado. Plus joc will be there.no need to pursue that until he signs.

just pay the man his money. If they’re trying to get him on a bargain by waiting out (and I don’t know that to be the case) that’s just awful. Sox not in a position to play hardball. Others will swoop in. Give him his $325 or $350 and make it an ultimatum.

There is value in having a competitive season with these young kids being a part of it. Just because the WS window isn’t likely next year doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try to get some guys to help them be better next year. Pederson isn’t stopping anyone from coming up and getting a shot. He also might stick for the long term eventually, you never know. It can benefit guys like Anderson and Moncada to get used to winning so when it’s tjme to finally be their “window” they know what it takes to win.

Maybe they do..but again, why do what is essentially a rent now?  If the Dodgers will take some probable AAAA guys off the 40 man, then fine.   But that won't happen...the Sox will deal upside.

Or trade Colome for him...that would be okay.

So run the risk of completely pissing off Lozano? There’s no way that works. If the Sox pull their offer, I have no doubt they are out on Machado. He’ll end up somewhere else.

Playing with fire usually gets u burned

Can't argue these points as they are both valid but at the end of the day, it is Manny who will make the decision where he plays, not Lozano. If Lozano fails to convey to Manny that he has the best offer on the table and he needs ti take it, then that's on him.

On day 1 of free agency what amount do you think it would have taken to sign Machado right away? Without his taking the offer to other teams to try to beat?

If you wanted to sign him on day 1 without him checking in with other teams you would have had to offer something that would have broken the total dollar and AAV records for sure. Maybe even a record for total years.

To sign on day 1?  No way. People were talking about that as reasonable to start the winter.

First day would have been extremely unlikely unless you were at something like 10 years 400 mil and told his agent if he didnt accept by the end of the day theyd offer it to Harper.

At minimum Lozano has to contact yanks/phils and see if theyd get in that range.

Is Aaron Bummer, Carson Fulmer, or Laz Rivera someone you think will be on our next playoff team?
