But $4 mil is too much to pay for such a player.  Given his age and his production last year that's at least a 100% overpay.  It isn't inconceivable that he could have been brought in nearer to spring training without a major league guarantee.  That alone gives some credence to all of the noise that this has more to do with Machado than Jay.

Jay is a useful, veteran presence on the bench and for occasional starts.  If he gets more than 300 at bats than the plan has gone awry.  If he stays healthy and gets less than 300 at bats than the plan may be coming together.

For next year? He should easily get over 300 at bats. Him and Engel will probably platoon.

It isn't 1988 anymore.

Yes he got a 33% raise after posting a .678 OPS.  Great contract negotiation.
Don't see the reason he should get any ABs but 300 should be the absolute max.

Lol...you just don’t get it sometimes.  See he had this thing called “leverage” because the White Sox wanted him for Machado reasons.  He probably would have got $3M otherwise because it’s still a weak CF market.

So we overpaid him by a million? :)

We can make that $1 million up by selling Alonso and Jay jerseys...assuming Machado signs, they'll get as much credit as anyone for making it happen.

(On second thought, I don't know of ANYONE buying Michael Ynoa jerseys because he helped recruit Luis Robert.)

That said, this will be the biggest announcement by the Sox in over two decades.

Lol, that would be funny. Jay was in Chicago today (Wednesday), possibly for that physical, so hopefully Manny finds relief soon. 😉

Get it done, Random White Sox Doctor.  We are waiting to buy our Machado Jerseys.

I'd rather pay Jay, whom can play all three OF positions, than pay Avi to play RF when he's occasionally healthy. With the Sox payroll as low as it is it's just silly to complain about spending 4M on Jay. That 4M has literally zero impact on the payroll this year.

Seems so simple, right?

Tilson vs Jay in 2019 would have been close to a coin flip IMHO.

The difference is Charlie would have been 3.5mm cheaper, has options remaining, 5 years of control and at least a glimmer of upside.

C'mon Manny!

Maybe, but the only problem with Tilson is he's literally been hurt since the first day he's been with us. Last year he finally wasn't but still felt like he was 3 steps behind. He's just had some bad luck.
