Updated with $/WAR: Every Hahn MLB Free Agent Signing since 2012/2013

2016 alone (and this doesn't include every signing) when the Sox were "going for it":

Austin Jackson $5 million
Navarro  $4 million
Latos $3 million
Avila $2.5 million
Albers $2 million
Rollins $2 million
Turner  $1.5 million

Total:   $20 million
And for the coup de grace, add $5 million for Shields.

Had to double check the list, couldn't even remember who Turner was.  The answer, not one of the several good ones.

The best thing is that Hahn will have to own his crappy offseason and continue to lie and say that both Alonso and Jay were targets for the Sox because of their own talents and not due to their ties to Machado.

I just can’t get over Alonso and Jay. I thought there’s just no way a conpetent GM would ever bring them aboard unless it would just about guarantee any tiebreaker goes to the Sox. I was naive to believe they’d ever tie any offer above their cheap baseline

They literally did everything wrong: raised expectations extending back years, signed/traded for a friend and relative, then provided an incentive laden contract instead of meeting Machados reasonable demands. Hahn/KW/JR all obtained shitlord status after this. The trolling done was beautiful

Great post.  You couldn’t get bamboozled worse than Hahn and Kenny did.  Raising the fans expectations a year in advance was the best part so they ensured that they would eat shit for this epic failure for a long time.

He had a 6.49 ERA, a 1.5 WHIP and averaged 4.4 strikeouts the year before....and Hahn paid him $1.5 million.....

There is 100% guarantee that for the next 10 years the Sox will have ~$20m+ in wasted trash players on the roster.

Fuck this franchise

Who is excited to go discount shopping with Rick Hahn?? We have plenty of money for b/c free agents!

Haha what a list. It's unbelievable.

Thank god, Hahn needs MLB's help to save him from himself. Bum

Good.

Right?  I don't mind him as a player but why wouldn't we give Rondon the ABs?

Because why not, it's not like we're going to use the money elsewhere, we may as well blow it and let some of the guys who are trapped here walk.

Are the Sox even allowed to DFA Jay if they wanted to after spring training? Has something like that ever happened before?

Jon Jay is fine for this roster and team, we need a 4th OF. Alonso on the other hand has no reason to really be on this roster.

DFAing someone before they even played a game? I don't know.

Just signing someone to lure a free agent over only to fail? No, that has never happened. 🤣

Would rather see Leury, Engel, Delmonico, and Palka...Fuck Jay

Eloy will be up soon as well

Like I said, wish CWS stayed put aside from adding bullpen pieces or a star

Maybe Kimbrel makes sense now if possible, Sox are loaded in the system there however

Yesterday I said I would actually count up the WAR and $ and see the totals.

So interestingly enough this pretty much all depends on whether you would consider Jose Abreu a "FA" signing. I did in this, but it's controversial because I think he should be more included as an international free agent.

So, WITH ABREU

Total Players (not including 2019 due to WAR): 43

Total Dollars: $254 million

Total bWAR: 26.9

$/WAR: $9.5 million

WITHOUT abreu

Total Players: 42

Total Dollars: 177 million

Total bWAR: 8.2

$/WAR: 21.6 million

Best non abreu signing?

I think it's likely Swarzak, who produced 1.9 WAR on 900k

Zach Putnam also produced 3.1 WAR on total 862k over several years

Melky and David robertson come in right around 9 million per WAR, so not terrible.

Total negative WAR players? 50%

Wait, 21 of his free agent signings have been negative players?  I would love to see the full list when you have a chance.

Yeah i can't figure out the shared spreadsheet. But all negative during their sox years (I took total sox career numbers from 2013-2018. Some had positive one year and horribly negative next).

Felipe Paulino

Ronald Belisario

Scott Downs

Dylan Axelrod

Brian Ommogrosso

Zack Duke

Adam LaRoche

Emilio Bonifacio

Scott Carroll

Matt Albers

Matt Purke

Nice work bmags, atrocious but somehow expected even worse.

You gotta hand it to abreu, he really muddies the water here.

Isn’t $9.5M/WAR pretty much exactly in line with or just a bit worse than league averages? That’s interesting.

Yup, without him that list goes from really sad to damn near parody

I wonder what a similar evaluation would look like with the Cubs since Theo took over? Lester certainly helps, much like Abreu did here, but Heyward, Chatwood, Darvish would all bring down the production rates significantly.

Moral of the story? Hahn hasn’t been good with free agent signings overall but his bad signings are greatly magnified because he is consistently working with low payrolls.
