And That's a White Sox Triple Play and Granny Winner !!

Recommended Posts

Thought for sure there would be a winners thread but alas here I am creating it very late after such a fun and historic game.

First of all the Sox beat the Astros 9-4. How they did it is the fun and history.

Most importantly, Rookie Eloy Jimenez hit 2 solo jacks and Yoan Moncada went 2/5 with an RBI. He also stole a base. These are the main 2 guys you want doing good things. Moncada also started the...

Triple play . Moncada was positioned perfectly to field a Jake Marisnick shot down the third base line. Moncada knew he was a pull hitter so got closer to the base before the pitch. He got rid of the ball quickly to Yolmer Sanchez who made a nice play on the low throw and made a nice turn to nip Marisnick at 1st base. This was in the 3rd inning after the Sox had turned a double play in each of the 1st 2 innings. The Sox not only turned the 5 4 3 triple play but also 4 double plays.

Probably most surprising of all with 2 outs and the bases loaded Charlie Tilson hit his 1st ML HR. He has been a revelation as a steadying influence in both the lineup and defensively since his recall from AAA Charlotte 16 games ago. Tilson is mostly known to be a speedy singles hitter so the grand slam came as quite the shock to everyone.

The triple play was the White Sox first since July 8, 2016, when they turned one during an 11-8 loss to the Braves in Chicago. They also turned one against the Astros that year, on May 18.

The White Sox are now only the fourth team in the last 40 years to have hit a grand slam and turned a triple play in the same game. The last to do it was the Tigers in 2017. The common thread between The White Sox and the 2017 Tigers ? James McCann., who has also been a revelation both behind the dish and in the batters box.

I haven't seen anything about it ,but I'd venture a guess that a triple play,  a grand slam by a guy for his 1st ML HR, 4 double plays and 2 HR's by a rookie more than likely make the Sox the first team to accomplish this in the history of baseball.

If anyone has seen anything in the twitterverse about it. please post it.

I frequently harp on the FO that baseball needs to be entertaining while the rebuild continues.  This was the game of the decade in many ways.  Great energetic game with double/triple plays, home runs (4), timely hits (McCann &Tilson), excellent pitching (Nova) and all this against a team that rarely loses a home.  ENTERTAINING!!!

Great win. Would be amazing if Gio brings it today and the Sox can salvage a series split against a team that was 18-4 at home coming into the series.

What a fun game to watch.  The defense was great and helped get Nova out of some jams.  The double plays in the first two inning were nice, but the triple play was awesome.  Stone and Benetti were talking afterwards about how offense is something fans want to see but to see these guys play stellar defense is an added bonus.  A triple play is one of the most exciting plays in baseball.

Speaking of offense, two solo jacks from Eloy and a grand slam from Tilson.  Eloy's swing looks so effortless.  He's going to hit a ton of home runs.  The Tilson granny was such a surprise.  After the Sox loaded the bases with no outs and then quickly had two outs, I was starting to get pissed.  Then Tilson saved the day with that mammoth blast.  This could be a guy who sticks around for the future.

Overall a nice win against a great team and really good starting pitcher.  Added to that, the young guys did well.

Tilson seems like another nice guy to root for.  As a lifelong Sox fan, I just love hearing a post game interview with a local guy who says being traded here was one of the best days of his life.

Are they going to go with a platoon of Tilson and Cordell for the foreseeable future?

I love the humility and gratitude of TIlson as well.

Maybe it's too early to tell about Tilson, but it sure looks like he's a MLB player. With Leury and McCann around also, the Sox could actually end up with a

real bench. If we can get Palka or Collins to play a passable 1B, we might be ready to go in 2020.

I was thinking last night that this is first time in recent memory the Sox actually have solid starters (not sure if this is Tilson's true talent level but for now he's been solid) in LF, CF and RF.

Getting Engel's fucking bat out of the lineup was a god send.  And so was getting rid of Palka's glove in RF.  Cordell is probably the 4th OF next year and that's not bad either.

McCann instead of Castillo and Tilson instead of Palka has improved the offensive and defense greatly.  Now if we could figure out how to get rid of Alonso we would be in business.  I would admit that Alonso is contributing just a bit of late.
