We want that extra year because we think we can contend in it. But what is the point of that if we decide to not compete in 2020? Either way you are losing a year of competing.

This has been repeated so many times.  The Sox would be without Robert for like 15 games in 2020. Losing him for 15 games >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> than an entire season.

The Sox can compete next year with Robert coming up in late April.  They won't compete next year if they sit out free agency again.  If you want to get up in arms about competing next season, worry about the Sox signing some SP and not Robert spending a little over 2 weeks of games in the minors leagues.

If we are not contending in his last year of his contract, and it doesn't seem like we will resign him, we can still trade him, which is worth a lot.

I don’t get it either.  This is easy to comprehend.  15 games is only 9% of a season.  I’d rather not have Robert play for the first 15 games of next season and have him for an additional 162 game season later in his career.

It's been repeated just as many times that it's not just about those 15 games.

We can do the same in 2025. We know that Detroit and KC will suck next year. Minny and Cleveland will probably win between 80-90 games. The division is their for the taking if we make the right moves. We don't know how good any of our teams will be in 2026, or that we will even have Moncada, Tim, Gio, or Kopech.

Which is all "what if".  Having him the extra year is definitive.  We don't know that calling up Robert tomorrow would have any meaningful difference on his 2020 performance.  Its logical to assume that he'd work through some struggles and adjustments, but these are just possibilities.  For all we know he rakes from the beginning and it makes no difference.  The extra year is for sure.

1. It's about calling him up August of this year so he is much better in a contending season of next year.

2. 15 games is a lot when talking about a division race. Two games may decide the division.

3. To compete, we need to have a good free agency and the best possible team out there ready to go day one. Madrigal is different because Garcia can man second just fine for two weeks.

Garcia can also make CF just fine for 2 weeks.

Both sides of this discussion keep repeating the same arguments.  At this point Hahn will have to work this out without our help.

It's really not worth discussing anymore, he ain't coming up. It is what it is.

15 games is a lot as far as a tight division race goes but how much impact does one player have in only 15 games?  That is how you have to look at it.

The fact that the Cubs did it with Bryant and the Sox will do it with both Robert and Madrigal means it’s likely the smart and logical play, regardless of the strange opinions posted here.  And before anyone argues that it pissed off Bryant and led to him refusing contract extensions, I call BS on that.  He hired Boras for a reason — to get him the biggest contract once he hits free agency.

If you are incredibly optimistic and say that Robert is a 6 WAR player the moment he gets to Chicago and with Adam Engel being the embodiment of a replacement level player:

We are talking about less than one win.

Exactly.  I was going to bring up WAR but I’m glad you did.  15 games just isn’t enough for one player on a team to make a big impact.

They did it with Jimenez too. He didn't come up in august and September due to these reasons. He only started the season in the MLB because of the offseason contract.

He struggled the first month or 2 until he started learning the league. If these couple of months were August and september last year, who knows where his season would be offensively. Also getting experience in the MLB OF may have made a difference with his defense as well as he has shown improvements lately, prior to getting injured of course.

To the argument of "get him to the majors so he can see MLB pitching and improve in the off-season": how is he going to work on anything without seeing MLB pitching in the off-season? He can't exactly work on and adjust without seeing it consistently (learning to lay off MLB caliber sliders and curves low and away for example).

He can still be coached on the good and the bad of his first two months. He can study his swing and approach against these pitchers whom he'd see again. The mindset of how you attack the off-season is probably different when you know you will be starting opening day as opposed to being in AAA. I think they they will wait to mid April, but I'm not sure that history will show it as the right move.

Why can't he play winter ball, in the Dominican, for example?   He could even play right next to Jimenez on the same team if they wanted to make it happen...obviously, there's going to be a heightened concern about injuries when they're outside of the control of the MLB club, but you can't keep putting Jimenez out into LF and then worrying everytime he's out there.   If you're going to do that, just make him a permanent DH now, but that's not what he signed that long-term extension with the intent of sitting on the bench for 6 years and watching the games.
