JD Martinez is a better player than Castellanos at this very moment, but JD is 32 and Castellanos will only be 28 on Opening Day...so he might actually be a better fit for the Sox. Just something to keep in mind.

I would wager that over the next 4 seasons, Castellanous NEVER has one year better than JDM... They aren't even in the same stratousphere of players..

I’m not going to pretend I’ve watched much of Castellanos playing D, but he did drastically improve in most, if not all, metrics in RF from year 1 to year 2. Granted he was still poor in RF this past year, but is it not possible a guy his age continues to improve in his 3rd year at a new position? We don’t need him to be a good OF’er per say, he just can’t hurt the team in the field.

DRS- 2018: -19, 2019: -9

UZR- 2018: -12.9, 2019: -5.2

Even just getting those 2 #’s to 0 and he’s probably a 3.5 WAR player.

Getting out of that hitter’s hellhole known as Comerica Park should help his offensive stats significantly. We already saw that   when he was with the Cubs. GRF is a hitter’s park too so I have no doubts he would thrive with the Sox.

Don't like this if true.  Not because I wouldn't like Castellanos on the team, but because he should be far down the priority list of players they should be pursuing right now.

If he’s a guy they like, they should most definitely pursue him right now.  We can afford multiple impactful additions.

Given the sparse OF options out there, I'd gladly take Castellanos at the 4 year/$56-58M Fangraphs and MLBTR are projecting, but I sure wouldn't throw $100M or the like at him.

If they sign Castellanos, I hope to god it's for DH and not RF.

Castellanos gets a big meh from me.  If he gets cheap enough (2/$30M or 3/$45 type deal), he starts to make a little sense.  But he's not a RF, and a career 112 wRC+ DH is pretty underwhelming, especially if you're paying him a lot.  And then he hits with the wrong hand.

Sox need good hitters, and Castellanos I guess fits the bill.  I would need to reserve judgement to see how the rest of the roster shakes out if the Sox signed him.  On paper, I think he's a pretty poor fit.

He has a wRC+ of 126 over the past two years.  If you believe that’s the level of hitter he truly is, then he’s a perfectly capable DH.  Also, MLBTR rumors brought up that his defense while still not good in 2019 was significantly better than it was in 2018.  If there’s room for growth, then maybe that changes the calculus a bit.  Honestly, if his price is truly 4/$60M, I’m suddenly far more interested in him, but I’d still pursue Grandal & Wheeler.

Castellanos is fine, as an overall hitter, but he has only been average vs. RH pitching, until last year. If they sign him, they still will need to find a LH bat. If he can really hold his own, in RF, then I'd like Grandal as the LH bat, at first base and DH, rotating with Abreu and splitting the catching with McCann, which has often been suggested here. Then go get some pitching.

Sign Grandal, Castellanos, & Wheeler.

This lineup would be significantly better than last year:

  1. Anderson, SS
  2. Moncada, 3B#
  3. Abreu, 1B/DH
  4. Jimenez, LF
  5. Grandal, C/DH/1B#
  6. Castallanos, RF
  7. Robert, CF
  8. Collins, DH* / McCann, C
  9. Madrigal, 2B

I'd be pretty happy if they could pull that off. Solid moves across the board. Though, I'd flip Grandal with Abreu.

I was thinking that I'd rather flip Abreu and Eloy. Putting the 2 LH hitters; Moncada and Grandal together, is not the optimum lineup.

I think it had to do more with getting out of that giant fucking park + the trade.  He OPS'd over 1000 with the Cubs.  I don't think it is unrealistic at all to see him consistently in the lower 900's at GRF.

Wishes he had $100 for every time he’s heard the same comment over the last three decades about potential hitters at GRF/US Cellular.

Order aside that would be a very solid lineup.

I'd still want them to add in a LH OF depth piece with some pop on top of that.

The #4, #8 and #12 free agents on the market?

Competing against at least 15-18 teams, overall?

One would like to believe it’s possible, but Grandal goes elsewhere and we get our 4th-6th preferred pitcher is the likeliest possible scenario if they sign Castellanos at anything approaching $60-75 million.
