I honestly don't care anymore. They just have to actually execute shit for me to defend them in any way. I don't care they offered more. I don't care if they are desireable or undesireable. I care that they targeted wheeler and failed. I don't believe in spreading the wealth in mlb. You get depth internally, you should use the surplus before re-signings on players you really love, not fallbacks.

100000%. Can't believe I got my hopes up again lol

Glad this is leaking.  Doesn’t change the fact that we’re in a tough fucking spot now, but at least they were aggressive as fuck and tried to get Wheeler signed.

I still think that family excuse is BS. The money was close and he just preferred playing for the Phillies. I made this argument for the past month that to get top FA's we will have to vastly overpay, and it looks like that is the case.

I think we have to ask ourselves if the Sox are a universally undesirable location for players. Somewhere they go when they have few or no options.

Give this shit a fucking rest you spaz.  The Sox are not an undesirable location, we just lost out because the money was just close enough and the tie-breaker was location.  This fucking sucks, but it is what is.

FWIW IL also has a higher state income tax than PA. So we do have to probably go 5/$130M to sway Wheeler's decision, with everything else considered.

this stuff is so marginal, 1% on half your income. And he'll have more games in states with higher income in east. It doesn't matter, it certainly isn't a 10mil gap.

Great, and when our #2 starter next year is Dallas fucking Keuchel we can all cry as we miss the playoffs.

If the White Sox win 85 - 90 games and miss the playoffs, you are going to cry?  I won't. They are still in the upswing of rebuilding.  Show more in the season and you can lock down those targets easier.  They still only won 72 last year.  It's one pitcher. Who may or may not have worked out.  I'm with Taylor St and I'll wait until they hit the field before I assign an offseason grade that really doesn't mean anything anyway.

Hed only pay state income tax on home games, away games are paid at the rate of where the opposing team is located. It would take some complicated math to figure out (IE games in CA/NY etc) but its not $12mil more, my guess is something like $4-5mil.

I mean, the guy likes the NL, he's familiar with the division and it's close to his family.

The union wants guys taking the biggest offer, but I don't think this was an anti-White Sox thing. If the Reds offered 118 and the Sox 120 I doubt he picks the Reds but who knows.

True, but we got big manned by the Phillies. Us big manning the Reds means nothing in this case. I am glad they put a big time offer down though.

Someone who does that for more than a year or two. Aka, someone like Scherzer and Verlander and Kershaw. Sale. Do it consistently for a half decade and you are a TOR starter.

You put Wheeler against Scherzer or Verlander in Game 1 of a WS and the line is -195 in favor of Scherzer's team against Wheeler. (By the way, he'd be pitching game #2 cause Gio would be out there... so the argument that he's a TOR can't even be backed up on his own team)

You mean the guys that get $200M contracts?

It's a minor factor, but one of the factors nonetheless. I think staying in close to home, doesn't have to face a DH (yet), playing for a team ready to win, in front of a rabid fan base all played a factor.

Honestly feel bad for Rick kind of.

Guy sees these rumors circulating about their offer of 5/110 not being good enough, panics and probably begged Jerry for 10 million more. "IT'LL GET IT DONE AND WE'LL REDEEM OURSELVES JERRY! FANS WILL REJOICE."

Jerry, for the first time in Rick's life says "you know what Rick, sure, let's do it. They want 120? Give them 120."

Rick leaves the room giddy calls the agent and tells him. They realize it's the high bid. News breaks Phillies sign him for less.

Rick cries; Jerry laughs; Kenny shits himself in anger.

Why would you feel bad for him? His job is to sign players, not submit competitive offers. Rick failed at his job again.

This is a bad look for the Sox, no matter how you spin it.

Also, you’re saying that if Scherzer and Verlander are on the same team, one of them suddenly “isn’t a TOR starter?”

I don't mind missing out on Wheeler. Everyone talks about how his arm has less innings, but his arm has less innings because he's hurt all the time. Why would anyone expect him to put up 200 IP when he's never done it before? He's also never been spectacular, which Bumgarner, Ryu, and Keuchel all have. His entire signing was predicated on potential, not past history. MadBum is the same age as Wheeler and was arguably a better pitcher last year. Only thing that scares me with him is pulling him out of that pitcher's park in SF- each of the last two years he's been far worse when pitching away from that place.

Everyone can shape this however we want but the Sox lost...again.   They're not going to be in on the top 2 because they're the White Sox and MadBum just isn't as good right now as Wheeler.  Who knows if the Rosenthal report is true but even if it is, it's going to be another huge L of an offseason but hey we tried again or something.

Yes. And he didn't get that. Which proves exactly my point - he's not a TOR starter. He's a nice piece, but by no means is a TOR. Markets dictate worth. If he was a TOR he'd get $6 and $180mm ... he's not.
