Jean Shepherd's America - White Sox

I've got a VHS tape of Shepherd's summer vacation movie "Olli Hopnoodle's haven of bliss". In one scene

the father comes home from work, picks up the sports section of the paper and says "dammit, the Sox lost again. They've won about 2 games since May."

I was screwing around on YouTube the other night when I found this video (presumably from the early 80s) that I'm sure some here would enjoy watching.  Hard to believe that old Comiskey has been gone for almost 30 years.

Jean Shepherd's America - Chicago (White Sox)

Notice how parking cost a whopping FIVE BUCKS.  🤣

Former sports writer  (and lifelong White Sox fan) Bill Gleason  maintained that the Old Comiskey Park should have never been knocked down. He said it should have been rehabbed. He also said that the White  Sox could have played at Soldier Field  while Comiskey Park was being rehabbed.

The upper deck boxes at old Comiskey were a million times better than today's park. If you had a seat between 1st and 3rd upper deck,

they seemed almost better than the boxes down stairs.

Keep in mind that JR changed the design of the upper deck at the new stadium. He wanted the 2nd level of suites which made the upper deck what it is today. The original design didn't have the miserable upper deck. It was JRs doing.

He also changed it when people didnt like the very top seats. Every owner wants a d needs the suites for revenue.

This was also the case with NASCAR tracks in the mid-to-late 90s. All the old school tracks that were a part of the culture and history of the sport were taken off of the schedule and replaced by billion-dollar, sterile, cookie cutters with no identity ... all for the media booths, suites and amenities.

I agree with him.  IIRC,  in Lip's interview with Mike Veeck on WSI, he said that it could've been fixed for a modest sum of money.

Historic preservation wasn't very common in the 80s and 90s.  Had today's attitudes existed back then, old Comiskey and Tiger Stadium would still be in use today.

Which design? Addison? Pinelas County, Florida?
