Yes but abreu will probably be moving to dh in the next year. Donaldson you have to hope to stay healthy to be the better fielder and not regress. Would not want to depend on Donaldson to be the hitter and fielder through that contract

Why can't Donaldson move to DH in 2 years?

That team can absolutely rake, unless Donaldson and Cruz fall off of a cliff.

I hate to say it, but I still think the Sox are the 3rd best team in the ALC on paper but it's close between the Sox and Indians.

On paper I still think the Cleveland racist stereotypes are a better team than either the Twins or the White Sox. They have currently the strongest pitching staff in the league, still have Lindor and Ramirez, and their OF grew up quite a bit last year. They had a nightmarish season of injuries last year. Maybe that repeats again next year and they have a bunch of injury prone guys, maybe the Twins still hit 300 home runs and a pitcher or two come through, or maybe the White Sox have 5 all stars from their kids, but don't underestimate that Cleveland team. A quick look at the steamer projections seems to have the Twins with Donaldson and the Indians being within a couple WAR of each other.

Chief Wahoo is gone.

It's a pretty even battle.

Is Ramirez an MVP candidate, or his first half 2019 version, or, more likely, something in-between?

Can Garver, Polanco, Rosario, Kepler and Arraez keep it up?   Donaldson and Cruz's health?

The Twins had a lot of career seasons, offensively.

You can never 100% count out the Indians, they're so resilient in the face of all the disadvantages they face each and every season, it's almost like repeating

Yikes that is a lot of money and a lot of years for a 34 year old. This makes the Abreu contract look even better for one less year and almost half the amount and he’s the leader/mentor of the team.

Nothing will make the Abreu deal look better.  The Sox threw extra money at him when they didn’t need to.

Why are people comparing Donaldson to Abreu?  He is a better hitter and a better defender at 3B, not 1B!  Ridiculous comparison outside of their similar ages.

The only way we can say that about the Abreu deal is...well, it's impossible, because we don't know how much that signing influenced Robert to commit long-term to an extension.

So even if we're overpaying Abreu in 2021-22, we're also getting a positive return on investment from Luis Robert (in the very prime of his career) on the back end of that contract.

This moves Sano to 1B too. He was a -6.7 UZR at 3B last season. Twins essentially locked up their 1B for 3yrs/$30M. That's a bargain for a guy who put up 34 HR's last season and is no longer is a liability in the field.

But that's like saying Mazara is even more of a bargain if he puts up similar offensive numbers in RF (to Sano at 1B).  Granted, historically, Sano has put up the more impressive fWAR numbers over time, despite all Sano's off-the-field/injury/weight issues.

We'll see.   Sano's defense is going to be tested over and over again by their middle infielders.   It's better with Donaldson and Sano on the corners than Sano/Cron, but how much remains to be seen.

Good post.  People who think the Abreu 3/$50 million extension was good need to look no further than Sano’s 3/$30 million extension to see that it really wasn’t.

But those are totally different situations.  Abreu was nearing the end of his career.

We can compare Anderson, Jimenez and Robert extensions to Miguel Sano a lot more accurately.

So you say he is nearing the end of his career?  Then be smart and don’t simply pay him more for past performances.  Stick with the qualifying offer and go year to year.

So you would prefer they would have signed Cron to a one-year deal?

What happens if you then lose Robert and Moncada (which could go either way, but it certainly more likely with Robert and Abreu and Grandal in the fold now) when they're unwilling to sign extensions?
