So extending him was unnecessary - just play it year to year and pay market value and/or see what else the market has to offer at the price. Guarantee with those guys it comes down to playing time. They're not signing somewhere to ride the bench when a top prospect comes up. With Holt, he should get a ton of playing time in that wide open infield left side of the infield. It is kind of surprising that Gennett hasn't signed anywhere though. At the end of the day, I'm not upset they guaranteed an additional $250k. The Sox are paying $250k to have the option to bring Leury back for a net cost of $3.25m without any other competition. If Leury has another decent season, it wouldn't be a total shock for him to beat that. If he sucks in 2020, you pay him the $250k and you move along. Its a non issue.
