Red Sox had him throw way too many sliders. That was the issue. Don Cooper knew this too and said as much even when Sale was here.

UCL reconstruction is more correlated with the increase in consistent velocity. There were articles last year detailing that in the middle of last season he was throwing with the highest velocity of his career. Cooper also knew this and they kept him under more control here.

Chris Sale average velocity each year.

2010 - 96.9 (reliever/Sox)

2011 - 96.0 (reliever)

2012 - 94.3 (starter)

2013 - 93.9 (starter)

2014 - 94.6 (starter)

2015 - 95.7 (starter)

2016 - 93.7 (starter)

2017 - 94.7 (starter/Boston)

2018 - 95.2 (starter)

2019 - 93.4 (starter)

Definitely dipped the last couple of years. Then when you look at how many sliders he's thrown..

Sox (2010-16) 4,289

Sawks (2017-19) 2,946

In 3 years and I believe that's not even counting the post season... Just insane.

That is the average for the whole year. If you go back  and read articles about last season, they will say that they ramped him up slowly last year but had his highest velocity of his career through the middle months of the year.

with the consistent velocity that pitchers are trying to throw over the last few years, UCL reconstructions are correlated more with the excessive tensile stress on the ligament due to the effort moreso than pure mechanics of offspeed pitches like the slider as was the primary issue from the 80s into the 90s.

Well they did a pretty crappy job of doing anything like that in 2019. 2018, ok maybe pre shoulder injury. 2019? Nah.

Looks like it. Maybe they were referencing 2018 and I missed it.

Pretty interesting that every year he averages over 95, the next year his average drops into the 93 range. So he peaks one year and drops off precipitously the next.

Not coincidentally peak average 2018, poor performance and injury 2019.
