I think it's a pretty good idea. The article made a good point that the owners make most of their money in the post season. There is a pretty good chance that no matter what anyone does there will be a resurgence of the virus in the Fall. If this happens and the playoffs are canceled it could be devastating for some teams. The sliding scale with post season money if they are played makes sense.

Maybe moving it or League Championships/WS to Japan/South Korea?   That time difference is hellacious for scheduling, though kids might actually be able to watch the endings of some games for the first time in ages.

So when everyone shuts on Jerry for being loyal, this is the other side of the coin.

I've heard that Oakland is one of the worst financially-managed organizations in the league

I don’t mean this in a bad way, but aren’t these guys better off on unemployment than making $400 a week? Federal subsidy alone is $600/week.

They aren't allowed to collect unemployment because they're employed by the Oakland Athletics.

Until July 31, most people making less than $23/hour are as good as or better off on unemployment than they were working.  After that, no.

But if whatever minor league affiliate (or frankly any entity, however it is structured) is their employer, and they stop paying them, what stops that guy from filing for unemployment?

It's in the agreement. They aren't allowed to file for unemployment. To my knowledge anyway.

Are we sure this is true? The CARES act allowed for people to file for UI even if hours were only cut.

Big yikes if true.  I could see that being the case if they're getting paid as they have to this point, but if they payments stop, not sure how they can in good faith tell minor leaguers they can't file for unemployment.

Actually, some seem to think they can file for it. Once the players and owners agree to a deal though, the Uniform Player Contract likely gets reinstated by the commissioner and their payments will continue though. This thing really hasn't been reported correctly which shouldn't surprise anyone.

MLB doesn't really care about good faith.  Remember they have an ant-trust exemption.

As much as I love professional sports as entertainment, part of me wishes the greed from all sides would cause it to collapse into itself.

Especially with what a lot of people are dealing with in 2020, it really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

This, hopefully, is one reason why they will come to an agreement.  Regardless of who is more to blame (owners), there are essential workers who have been working their asses off for a couple months making pennies compared to baseball salaries who will have no compassion for whiny billionaires and millionaires.  We're all dealing with a lot of shit right now, and we'd love to see baseball to help us get through this.  But it they want to cancel the season over money, it will definitely leave a bad taste.

Hockey coming up with a plan has to put more pressure on baseball too.

I know everyone is talking about the money part as that makes more headlines, but it's also clear the PA had objections to the player safety setup and those objections are going to make things way more complicated too.

The initial MLB plan for testing - players every few days, limited testing of ground crews or other staff members - was clearly inadequate, and that testing proposal would have been hard to manage and cost over $30 million according to an article by Passan last week. Doing a testing regime correctly, for multiple months - we're talking about probably $100 million plus in testing costs, and something like >1% of the virus tests done in the entire country being done by Major League Baseball or their contractor.

There are major issues here that aren't getting the same press as the contract proposals.

A longer season makes little sense without fans, concessions, parking, etc.   That creates a stronger argument for the players to be paid more...but it also pushes the season well into November.

That MIGHT make sense if MLB wasn’t competing with football at that time, to try to grown/broaden the fanbase and experiment with some innovative ideas/new formats.

It's really all about the money.  Look at the players proposal. Keep the prorated salary and add more games so they get more money. This pushes the season later so there is a less likelyhood for more playoffs thus the owners get less money.

They are both posturing for more money.

After reading the owners' proposal, I'm not certain the owners even want to have a shortened season.

Yeah, that's where I'm at. The Owners are on the opposite side of the universe from the players. About as far apart as they can be. I don't see how they're going to be able to play. Not enough time to mend the grand canyon sized gulf between them.

Given that there's questions about the 2021 season having fans, It seems that the next CBA negotiations are happening now. Labor Armageddon is here.
