It shouldn't have been an emergency meeting. They should have planned for this. All the news reports say the game has been cancelled, not postponed. Interesting. Forfeit win?

The plan was specifically to avoid this. Small case numbers are fine, the thing they wrote their rules to avoid was team wide outbreaks from spreading at the ballpark. This was what they wrote the rules to avoid.

The alternative to taking this not seriously is no baseball.  It took 3 days for this to happen.  Hopefully this serves as a lesson for schools.  Even with all of the precautions and resources in the world, the most socially distant of sports in the US took 3 days for a scenario like this to happen.  But I am sure our resource starved schools will be fine.

Has there been any workplaces that have been able to contain outbreaks?

The choice seems to be descend into a crazy season with teams using most of their 60 available players or stop. It's US business so follow the money . . . everybody gets called up eventually.

Yeah, just giving those wins to whoever was supposed to play the Marlins would be ONE solution.  You certainly wouldn’t want to reward organizations for not containing outbreaks.   But do they (Marlins) still have to send out taxi/scrimmage teams to keep the starting pitchers in alignment for the next series?   Stopping and starting for 2-4 games at a time is terrible for teams trying to get in synch with the new reality.

It’s definitely not going to help the Phillies, they inexplicably lost 2/3 games to Miami.

I’m listening to the podcast "In the Bubble" with Andy Slavitt right now, whose guests are two epidemiologists. The first question he asked them was how safe is air travel? On a scale of 1 to 10, they rated it a 5. That’s not good enough. One of the doctors frames risk in terms of how many breaths you share with someone. They both said they would refrain from air travel this year.

I’m worried about the Phillies, but hopeful that having played the Marlins won’t lead to Phillies’ infections, only because they play outside and have some distance between them much of the time. I’m glad Rhys & Didi wore masks on the field, and that Kingery hopefully has immunity. JT & Segura should wear masks on the infield, too. Coaches already have to, right? And I maintain that players should have to wear masks when batting and base-running.

That’s if they try to keep this going.

Also, what about those in the Phillies’ organization who maintain the visitors’ clubhouse?

They’re being quarantined. The Yankees brought their own crew.

We know mask wearing and distancing can limit it, even if people are infected, but we know they aren’t perfect, and any time people bend the rules it raises the chances of this type of large outbreak.

THey haven't enforced any rules.

They said players would sit in the stands, and that lockers would be in suites and no one would be in the lockerroom. They said no spitting and etc. All of it is nonsense. They said no high fives or celebrations; there have been plenty.

My guess is MLB says “last chance”. Maybe they even announce some enforcement of the rules they aren’t enforcing.

This seems likely.  Anyone watching the games over the weekend saw a lack of masks and/or social distancing.  Plus, we don't know what has been going on outside of the game.  Are these guys going out and exposing themselves to potentially infected people?

If they (and we) want this season to continue, rules need to be followed and maybe new rules need to be instituted.

It was never going to work. I just thought it would have lasted longer than four days.

Yesterday, reports surfaced that four Marlins players tested positive for COVID-19,including Harold Ramirez, Garrett Cooper, and Jose Urena, all members of the active roster. Instead of postponing or forfeiting their game against the Phillies, the club rallied together and played ball, pandemic be damned.

That turned out to be an exceptionally stupid idea, as Jeff Passan reported this morning that eight (EIGHT!) additional players and two coaches on the Marlins have tested positive for the coronavirus. Ken Rosenthal noted that tonight’s game between Miami and Baltimore Orioles has been cancelled, as the team remains bunkered down in Philadelphia.

The Yankees are expected to play in Philadelphia tonight. I have a hard time believing it’s safe for them to do so. Craig Mish says that the clubhouses followed guidelines, and believed it to be safe. Joel Sherman adds the Yankees will staff the visiting clubhouse tonight themselves, if they play. But that says nothing of the fact that the Marlins were in close contact with the Phillies, and now any of those players could be carrying the virus.

Baseball has a history of transcending crises, leading to spectacles of great human achievement, moments of light, if not glory, emerging from the cracks in a period of darkness.

This is not one of those times. It never could have been. You can’t out-will a pandemic. The virus doesn’t care about the intangibles or winning it for the guys who can’t take the field today. The only concerns it has are replicating and shedding. That’s it.

The Yankees shouldn’t take the field tonight. They shouldn’t even go to the ballpark. It’s irresponsible if they do. An outbreak was the worst-case scenario, and it happened in the first series of the season. This is as big of a disaster as one could imagine.

This is a developing situation. Follow Pinstripe Alley for the latest updates.

Well, they tried. Even if they have to shut down the season, it was better for the game to do the summer camps, play some ball, and stay in the public view. It would have been much worse for MLB if they went from 2019 World Series to 2021 Opening Day (whenever that is), and then have an expiring CBA to boot.

Question...it's the old if a tree falls in the forest but noone is around conundrum...If Gio Gonzalez pitches in a blowout game in a season that was just 3 games long, did he ever really pitch for the White Sox?

the players not in the stands thing - that was pretty weird that wasn't done, right? I still think it's more likely off field activity. But they made a big deal of building that tent, and its just the taxi squad guys in there?  Why?

When the outbreak in the US got worse, baseball should have become more cautious, not less. So many weird, constantly dumb decisions.

Funny, but they played. It counts.

So you think 14 of 30 members of one organization contracted the virus in... off the field activity? What? I think it's pretty safe to say they contracted it because they were around each other.

I think this will all come down to the Phillies test results tonight.

If the Phillies test positive and someone got it from the Marlins, the season is over. If not, they'll tell hte Marlins tough shit, use your taxi squad.

Not only them, but Flowers and D’Arnaud were already ill in Atlanta.

The Marlins played there Tuesday and Wed.   Lag time.   Probably more.

Reds have at least three in Davidson, Moustakas and Senzel.

For the record,  their positives included coaches.
