Quin Posted August 2, 2020 Share Posted August 2, 2020 This is more of a thought exercise because while Jirschele is clearly being groomed to be manager of the future, I doubt they would ever put a rookie manager in who hasn't coached above A-ball in during a playoff hopeful season. This is primarily targeted at vets - are there old-guard vets on our team that wouldn't respond well to him? He seems to have the respect from all of the younger players he's managed and that may extend to vets, hard to say. The old school thinking of Abreu must bat 3rd against all pitchers because he’s a veteran / leader would hopefully die and we’d see younger guys bat in more value-optimizing spots. Manuel was more known for his off the field non-violent pacifism than his managerial process...basically, his ability to work with and manage younger players. But he was hardly considered a "baseball savant." Torborg and Ozzie (2004-2010) were the best that I remember clearly. Obviously, LaRussa/Leyland/Francona are/were the three that got away. It's a funny post by DA that holds some truth in regards to fan's attitudes towards coaches/managers, but the Sox have been gifted with particularly awful strategic managers for a long time.
