Seeing some stories out there that the spending around baseball is going to be even less than anticipated. Heck, the below article says some teams won’t spend any money at all until there’s more clarity.

https://www.sportico.com/leagues/baseball/2020/mlb-debt-2020-manfred-1234615474/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

I was just about to post something similar. There is speculation that a playoff team from 2020 will be cutting next years payroll 40%. Most think its Cleveland. Mlbexecutive burner over on twitter is claiming ownership will claim $3.1 billion loss for this season without fans. That averages to over $100 million per team. Obviously some will be higher than others.

Wouldn't be surprised if they start negotiating for a shorter season next year. Ownership will definitely want to change the financial constraints or structure that they were under for this pass season.

I think the gm/owners meetings next month will have a different tone - covid-19 tone.

So "how much will the Sox spend on free agents this year?" is a real tough question now more than ever. Maybe the better question is  -  how many payrolls will be cut this year around baseball? And will the whitesox be one of them?

I think there are two roads we can choose to go down:

1.  Let McCann walk and roll with one of the best catchers in baseball (Grandal)

or

2.  Sign McCann to be the primary catcher, which pushes Grandal to a DH/C/1B. Then trade Vaughn in a package for an absolute stud starting pitcher.

I'm one of the biggest Vaughn fans on this board, but I wouldn't hate option 2 if we got a legit ace.  I'm just not sure anybody is available who fits that description.

I wouldn't completely hate Vaughn for Woodruff or something, but I just am uneasy with the idea of trading such a polished and powerful hitter to open up ABs for James McCann, who could very easily revert to a league-average or worse hitter

The idea of trading Grandal really is a non-starter this winter.  The idea of trading Vaughn for a pitcher makes a LOT more sense, as teams will be way more in the market to dump salaries and take on cheap cost controlled talent versus an $18 million per year catcher still owed for 3 more years.

I don't think we will see fans until summer and many will not be attending at all. I could see some teams not bidding but we might see more trades.

I think you're right. The state of California will not let any household/family gatherings larger than 4 people for Thanksgiving next month. 6 people if they are outside and socially distanced. Not sure if or how that will be inforced? But that's not my point. The point is if They're this strict with family gatherings they certainly will be with fans in the stadiums come opening day 5 months from now. Oh yeah and there are 5 teams in that state.

If the Owner is bringing his guy out of retirement he's going to give him assurances he's going to spend the money nessessary to field the best team possible.

Suddenly I’m all for LaRussa if that’s what it takes for Jerry to open up the wallet.  Would prefer many other younger candidates but it is what it is, at least it’s anybody but Ricky.

I’m not too worried about Tony being against players kneeling.  At the end of the day it’s Jerry’s organization and he along with Kenny/ Hahn are not all of a sudden going to say Timmy/ Jose are not allowed to kneel and to keep quit.  I imagine that might’ve already been discussed and hashed out with Tony.

The Sox are going to spend what they are going to spend.  Jerry isn’t going to tell Hahn the payroll is $180M with La Russa, but only $130M with Hinch.  That’s just completely nonsensical.

I just got to think that they would do the same thing for Hinch, giving him assurances that they will spend money. The Sox aren't going to be the only team competing for Hinch - who has a very impressive resume in his own right.

LaRussa can go straight to his good friend and tell him this is the player we need to put us over the top.  Hinch would have to call Jerry's secretary and hope to set up an appointment some time in the next month.  And don't forget the coffee and donuts.

I think JR, Hahn, and Kenny frequently talk about improving the team. JR isn't some casual fan that only knows when runs are scored. AJ Hinch could just go through Hahn if it were true.

So why would Hahn put himself in a trap like this?

If Hahn was not allowed to hire his own manager he would probably quit.  This Jerry is going to override the front office and force them hire La Russa is total bullshit.  That is not how the dude operates.  I’d wager large sums of money that Hinch will be the manger within 10 days after the World Series.
