Offseason Targets

I've actually been thinking a lot lately about the potential of Rodon as a closer, if the control came.

I really like the idea of sending Crochet to stretch out in the minors as a starter, while both Bummer and Heuer are like bullpen Manbearpigs as half closer, half vulture, and half mid-game rally killer, instead of either being a straight closer.  I actually think that if you have a nasty 3-headed monster, the least terrible / frightening head of that monster should be the one who gets to start most appearances with a clean inning / nobody on base.

This seems certain to happen, as long as is there is a minor league season.

I saw this mentioned before, but what about moving Robert to RF and put Engle in CF as your 2021 starting outfield?  The downside is you have an all righthanded outfield but at least your weakest hitter is at a premium defensive spot.  That would free up money to go big on at least one but maybe 2 starting pitchers.

Robert is a better defensive CF. You are getting the same production regardless so this is just worsening your team for no reason. Engel would be a plus RF so at least you have premium outfield defense.

Because Robert plays one of the best CFs in baseball, and Engel played a really good RF when he was there.  Robert is the guy who is going to be starting out their for the next decade, so no need to jerk him around.

Here is what I'd like to see the sox do this off-season.

Give McCann a QO no way in hell he is going to take it seeing how catching is at a premium and whomever loses out on Realmuto will likely spend on him. Worst case we have him on our team for 1 more year and he can be dealt as well. In this scenario i'm assuming we pick up the comp pick.

Decline the options of EE & Gonzalez and DFA Mazara and Rodon; time to move on.

Work out a contract with Yolmer in a similar fashion to Garcia's last year; obviously wants to stay here after testing out free agency and seeing it blow up in his face. He hit well enough in his abbreviated stint here, and we need left handed bats for the bench and flexibility.

Sign Quintana to a 2/18 with option and buy out.

Sign Ha-seong Kim to a 6/54 deal. He'll be 25 at the start of the season and would add a different dimension to this team, plays SS and 3B.

Anderson - SS - 27
Moncada# - RF - 25
Abreu - DH - 34
Jimenez - LF - 24
Robert - CF - 23
Grandal# - C - 32
Vaughn - 1B - 23
Kim - 3B - 25
Madrigal - 2B - 24

Collins* - C - 26
Sanchez# - IF - 29
Garcia# - UT - 30
Engel - OF - 29

Giolito - SP - 26
Keuchel* - SP - 33
Dunning - SP - 26
Quintana* - SP - 32
Cease - SP - 25

Bummer* - CL - 27
Heuer - SU - 24
Marshall - SU - 31
Foster - SU - 26
Cordero - MR - 29
Fry* - MR - 27
Burdi - RP - 26
Crochet* - LR - 21

Payroll including retained and buy outs comes in at about 110M roughly. If McCann accepts 127.5M.

Uh if you give James McCann $19 million for next year, he will take it in a heartbeat and laugh all of the way to the bank.

Move one of the best defensive 3B in the sport to RF for a guy we haven't ever watched play 3B?

I’m sure Yoan would stay healthy in RF with quick sprints and being around the wall....not

If you offer McCann a QO he’s a 100% chance accepting it and that means you paying your backup catcher $18M.  And I’m not trying to be a dick, but we need to add more than one pitcher this offseason and hopefully the best one we add is better than Quintana.  IMO, your moves really don’t move the needle much and surprisingly cost us a lot of money.

Offseason Target 1A: Andrew Vaughn

Offseason Target 1B: Michael Kopech

Offseason Target 1C - Garett Crochet

Offseason Target 2 - George Springer or Michael Brantley

Offseason Target 3 - Starting Pitcher acquired via trade

Offseason Target 4 - Jose Quintana

Really guys, think about just what we’re adding by substitution next year....

- Garrett Crochet for Jimmy “worst long man in baseball” Cordero.

- Michael Kopech for Gio Gonzalez / Babyface Lopez

- Andrew Vaughn for Edwin “Let’s rival Adam Dunn” Encarnación

Just those three additions, even as growing rookies... will be huge.

Boost the rotation. Solidify right field... and go to war.

Let's have some fantasizing...

For OF: Any of Springer, Starlin Marte, Nimmo, Conforto, Gallo, Mike Yas/ Yelich (pipe dream trade) would be cool with me.

For SP it is a bit more murky. I don't think we have a chance in hell at Bauer, but I'd take Bauer obviously. IMO we really need a Top starter, so I prefer trade (if we don't get Bauer). Maybe something with Milwaukee for Burnes/Woodruff/Hader in the pipe dream trade (lol). Maybe deGrom (unlikely obviously). I really don't know where the W'Sox can go from here. Not a lot available 😕

I'm pretty open, but the only thing I don't want is band aids like Quintana and Stroman leading our offseason. I need an ace to feel happy.

I'm in the camp that Keuchel is going to suck next year. Giolito seems ace quality, but we can't rely on our rookies to mend the gap.

Those 3 guys plus someone like Brantley to DH (assume Vaughn++ would go in the trade) and Gausman (one of the young pitchers would be going to MIL too) this team would be a big problem for the league.

I don't think we even need to overcomplicate the SP situation.  Go sign Q to $8-10M 1 year deal for the 5th SP.  I am sure he'd love to return to the familiarity of the Sox, and he didn't do himself any favors this past season heading into FA.

Then try to get a mid to TOR starter.  Bauer would be great obviously, but everyone is going to want him.  Stroman is the guy I want.  Can probably get him for 3/$50M or so.

Then who knows what kind of impact CV has on the market.  Could perhaps get those guys even cheaper.

Then just go find a suitable RF via trade and you're in business.

IDK, I'm not thrilled with Quintana/Stroman/Keuchel.

What about a realistic trade here: Us going after Lance Lynn and Joey Gallo?

Texas should be rebuilding and has no need for assets that are quickly turning into free agents. It should not cost us an exuberant amount of pieces.

For us, we get a much needed top starter in Lynn and a Left handed batting corner outfielder that adds a ton to our line up with his high OBP and insane power. I'm a big Gallo fan and that to me would be significantly better than most other options in the OF.

My guess is McCann will sign for something less than half of a qualifying offer.
