I'm with Pence for rejecting the 25th amendment to remove him.  It's clearly intended for a disabled president, not one committing impeachable offenses.  And impeachment is going to fail, although delaying the process 100 days while Congress tries to fix all the other bad stuff is a good idea.

But when you consider intentions, I don't think the Founding Fathers intended that every mouth breather should have the right to an arsenal of war weapons in his garage. Ahh, maybe they did. 😮

There’s a lot more to the 25th thinking. It was passed in the middle of the Cold War, where you also had to be concerned that a president might be too aggressive or not aggressive enough with a nuclear war. If Russia were to be launching and the president hesitated, the 25th gives a way to overrule him. That is intentional, so that there’s a check on behavior that the cabinet judges is a threat to the US.

Do they have similar polls from 2000 when Bush/Gore happened? I'm just curious if the same question was asked than to a democrat, what % thought, for example, that there was widespread voter fraud in 2000.  Legitimate question - not trying to be a smart alleck.

Additionally - I truly believe there is a difference between Trump and Cruz. I can't stand them both, but I don't believe for one second that Cruz would want or support violence. Now he may have indirectly led to hit by the use of his words and rhetoric, but I believe Cruz is more a constitutionalist who believes in following the various process and he is simply voicing what many on the right have said, which is open things open and go through more checks. We can all say what we think - which is it is crazy and there have already been 60 some odd cases with no this or that, but what he is asking for is for a pure investigation of the matter. He is not asking people to riot or incite violence.  He was not on the stage like Rudy and some of the Trumps telling people to go do x and y.

I think of Cruz as the guy who is just a total rightist lawyer who just wants to push everything, but in a pencil pusher type of way that fits his narrative. I can't stand the guy - but I don't necessarily think the guy is demanding an insurrection or anything of the like. He just wants to push his narrative so he can push that same view to parts of the party that he ultimately needs (or at least feels he needs) in order to keep his power, etc. Call it the placate the president without breaching the constitution.  Reality is - I think he didn't want to go toe to toe with Trump, so he called for what would be a waste of government resources but would quietly placate his relationship with the party and prevent him from Trump's fire, while also assuming everything would go away in 2 weeks when Biden took over. I think most of the members of the right who were saying those things were doing exactly that as well (not just Cruz).  They were purely stating - constitution says we can do such and since #45 has said as much and keeps demanding as much, lets go through the process and show that everything was on the up and up (even if it already has been done 60 times).

I will note I won't make that same statement of others on the right who I think are in the exact same camp as Trump and I still think of majority on the right as total spineless in their constant approval of #45 despite so many reckless choices he made.  The above are just my views of Cruz and I have no idea - maybe he is just extreme in his wishes as Rudy and Trump.

Just want to go back to this.

There may be a difference between Trump and Cruz--true believer vs. cynical asshole. But that's where the differences end. At best, Cruz fully knows he's been helping spread the Big Lie about the election being illegitimate and stolen for months, and that his votes last week were the culmination of that. There was no legitimacy to any of his claims, and his concerns were all bad-faith bullshit. It was mountains of red meat for the conservative base and helped further the lie that Trump didn't actually lose and that Biden/Harris are illegitimate. There's no way to differentiate the effect their actions have just because their motivations may be different.

Nobody should humor any of his bullshit, his fake calls for "election integrity." He doesn't care. This was entirely about attacking Biden's legitimacy and endearing himself to the Trumpist base.

One thing that this country has to do, and, this especially applies to the GOP who enabled Trump, is that we have  to deal with the violent political climate right now. And I am really tired of hearing the system is "rigged." Of course, it is rigged to a large extent. It is hard to get elected without money and connections. Also, many times political power is passed on from one generation to another. But we can't have anything that is even close to a responsive system when people think they have the right to do what the rioters did. And we certainly don't need power hungry dictators like Donald Trump. Finally, the god damned election wasn't stolen from him.

We have big problems in this country right now, and we are not going to address those problems by waving guns and chanting dumb ass slogans. As Americans we have the right to demand more from our government. But that is not going to happen with racism and violence.

Regardless of whether Cheney and co started that war for revenge, because they believed it was the best thing for the US, or that it would make them richer...I'm pretty sure that inciting a mob to head to Congress and try to take hostages, kill Americans, and overthrow the government still actually does win.

Depends on how much you value the loss of a human life I suppose. I don't really care which one "wins" though.

I do get a kick out of the Republican who just spoke who said we need MORE investigation. Wasn't this the party that complained about investigations last time?

One sad thing about this is all the National Guard that is now necessary in DC will be taking away from vaccine distribution. Elections matter a lot.

Great, let's get Bengazi on this.  Get the President on the stand for a full day and let's here what he knew and when.

These were the same people who already judged the last impeachment without hearing a thing. Now, all of a sudden, they need hearings. This is about 1 act. They have seen the video, the audio. I hop when their grandchildren read about this one day, they are just shamed their relative was a traitor to the US.

Quote

As people rushed out of other buildings on the Capitol grounds, staffers in Pressley’s office barricaded the entrance with furniture and water jugs that had piled up during the pandemic. Groh pulled out gas masks and looked for the special panic buttons in the office.

“Every panic button in my office had been torn out — the whole unit,” she said, though they could come up with no rationale as to why. She had used them before and hadn’t switched offices since then. As they were escorted to several different secure locations, Groh and Pressley and her husband tried to remain calm and vigilant — not only of rioters but of officers they did not know or trust, she said.

Just saw some film about the Fascist takeover of Italy in the early 1920's.  The paramilitary Brown Shirts beat up the first voter out of the polls all over the country "because he didn't vote for Mussolini," regardless of who he voted for.  Sort of set the tone for Election Day.

We're lucky there are no Brown Shirts around here. 😁
