Imagine if we got Darvish and Lynn even?  I’m sure the Cubs would expected more from us, but the price really wasn’t that crazy.  Just sucks as we really don’t have a bunch of younger 45 FV type prospects outside of Thompson & Dalquist and they’re both top 10 guys for us.  This is where us failing to spend our full international bonus pool and not having a 2020 minor league season really hurts, as our limited crop of LatAm & HS talent missed out on the opportunity to move from the 40 to 45 FV level.

That said, one of the two lower rated players from the Padres supposedly made huge strides in 2020...to the point where "observations in swing improvements" led him to the periphery of their Top 10.

I guess the other part of it we just jumped from Crochet's draft year to him directly being an integral part of the current roster and not considered a realistic trade piece (due to the possibility of following in the lines of Sale.)  Normally, those recent draft pick guys would build depth in a system over a 2-3 year period.

We also have the 2 big Lat Am signings, but those realistically aren't considered legit trade pieces since doing so (quickly) would put a damper on the so-called Cuban Connection.

The Dustin Fowler lawsuit would have gone much more smoothly, that's for sure.

We can just send Rudy Guiliani with his melting Just For Men dye job to scare them off (and simultaneously make sure to hide any Kazakhstani girls employed at 35th and Shields).

By the way, I've still, to this day, never seen any evidence of a 14-15 year old Tatis brother or half-brother awaiting in the Lat Am pipeline.

Fernando Tatis Jr. The son of Maria and Fernando Tatis Sr. His dad is a former 11-year MLB veteran infielder, widely known for hitting 2 grand slams in 1 inning on April 23, 1999 @ LAD (with STL) off Chan Ho Park... Has 3 brothers, Joshua, Elijah and Daniel, and 1 sister, Maria Fernanda.

His younger son Elijah is also a baseball player and was signed by the Chicago White Sox in 2019.

Tatis III is the oldest of five born to Fernando and Maria. The other boys are Joshua, Elijah and Daniel. Maria is the girl.

Cubs sold high on Darvish no doubt about it. 35 year old injury prone pitcher who happened to pitch his best twelve starts in ‘20. Davies numbers are actually somewhat comparable since start of ‘19. It was only a year ago Darvish led NL in home runs allowed.

What numbers are comparable between the two of them?  Darvish is a dominating, plus stuff pitcher who has consistently struck out guys at a high rate.  Meanwhile, Davies is a sinkerballer who throws below 90 MPH and has a career K rate of like 6.5/9.  People are trying to say 2020 was a flukey 12 starts for Yu, but why can’t the same be said for Davies?  Check out his Statcast figures from last year and see who is more likely to regress, especially when you consider Darvish has been awesome since the second half of 2019 when he started throwing his cutter more.

How does winning a horseshit division with one other team attempting to field a competitive team equate to being in a "multi-championship window"?

There are only a half dozen teams actually working to field a championship team in 2021. The White Sox are a few significant moves away to be discussed among them.

But that's exactly the problem.  The owner doesn't believe in taking those few $ignificant moves.

His first loyalty is to the cabal of non-sportsmen businessmen out soley to make a buck.

No matter what SD does they will not be on par with the Dodgers.

SD is definitely better than the Sox with these two moves.

Now watch LAD go after Bauer.

The World Series goes through LA.

We need affluent sportsmen that can play in that space.

Lord knows we definitely don't have it with Reinsdorf.

It's too bad because the Cubs are back-tracking again and control for the baseball entertainment dollar is up for grabs.

Weren't the Cubs suppose to win multiple championships a la the 90's Bulls ?

They came up a tad short.

The Padres are obviously going for it now, and big.  Adding Darvish and Snell is huge for them, but they did give up quite a bit of their farm in these two moves.  Don't get me wrong, they did well, especially with the Darvish trade.  But what would have been the mood here had the Sox made these moves and given up comparable talent?  Would we be pleased, pissed, a little bit of both?

You already know the answer to this. Look at the people crying after we gave up Dunning.

Yeah, I was thinking the overall feeling would be unsupportive of two big moves that deplete your farm.  However, the win-now attitude is appealing.  We just haven't seen that from this team.

This is actually a frustrating part of the board.

There are so many facets to roster building in baseball which is what makes it so interesting.

But when a group of posters criticizes the Sox taking off the 2018 intl period it gets pushed off as whining because Sox have had success with Cuban market. And if Sox aren’t the worst at something you can’t criticize it.

But then when a trade like this happens, it shows the downside of not getting that talent - we didn’t have a comparable talent package because we signed Yolbert Sanchez instead.

And then it’s just “well if we would have traded for Darvish we’d have whined because we gave up X”.

The Sox have had a lot more success in so many avenues than where they were in 2016. The draft, player development, international - all better.

But they still hold back and it has repercussions like this - where a good player is available for a reasonable cost and they missed out on getting the pieces needed two years ago had they just spent $1 million more on a budget that should just be an automatic like item.

I believe Cubs carefully culled the Padres talent pool and plucked some terrific prospects. The problem is they are all very young 17, 18, 18, 20. My sense is at least 3 of them, if not all. will will become top 100 prospects in next year or two and all of them have star potential. Cubs obviously entering rebuild with a several year horizon. What I don't  understand is why Hoyer couldn't convince Preller to take on Kimbrels contract as part of the deal. It would have helped even things up and shed a big chunk of dinero.

Darvish was also one of the best pitchers (if not the best) since June 2019

Sox did not have comparable talent to match or exceed this package. Its possible Cease could have replaced Davies as headliner but the other 4 pieces are extremally tooled up teenagers with mature physiques (2 SS, 2CF). These kids are gonna be very good...just not for several years.
