I remember when some people were saying how the Padres were a model org and praising Preller to the moon lol love seeing them burn to the ground.

Meanwhile, the team’s unraveling is bringing scrutiny to the GM who handpicked Tingler and who has yet to oversee a winning record in a full season. Almost everyone speaks highly of Preller’s talent evaluation ability, work ethic and creativity, but in interviews with more than 20 current and former Padres staffers, players and rival officials, almost all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity, a number of criticisms emerged. The most common involve Preller’s reputation as a micromanager, his track record of dubious roster construction and a perceived tendency to shift blame.

Preller declined comment for this story, as did Seidler, saying they would speak publicly after the season ends. Some of Preller’s chief lieutenants took exception with another complaint, that he frowns upon dissent. He often opens meetings, they said, by telling staffers he wants their opinion right then rather than after a decision is made, and routinely solicits input from employees at all levels, asking for their “takes.” “A.J. listens to everything,” said Logan White, a senior advisor to Preller and the Padres’ director of player personnel. “I don’t know anybody that listens to more shit than that guy does.”

This could happen in the wild card race with 3 games left.

Scenario: Three-team tie for one Wild Card spot

If, for example, the Yankees were in the top Wild Card spot and the Blue Jays, Red Sox and Mariners were all tied for the second spot, the three tied teams would choose/receive A, B and C designations. Club A would host Club B on Monday, Oct. 4. The winner of that game would then host Club C on Tuesday to determine the second Wild Card spot. The AL Wild Card Game would be pushed back from Tuesday in this scenario.

Sorry if someone already discussed this, but if the eventual wild card team beats the Rays in the ALDS and has a better regular season record than their division winning ALCS opponent, which team gets home field advantage?

Wild card teams never get home field unless they face another wild card team in the World Series that had a worse record than them.

Around the horn:

  • The Philadelphia Phillies clinched their first winning season over .500 since 2011 with their win tonight.
  • The Baltimore Orioles need to salvage a win in their final two games, and the Arizona Diamondbacks need to sweep Colorado, to avoid becoming the 22nd / 23rd teams in MLB history to lose 110 or more games in a season. Baltimore would also become the only franchise with four 110 + loss seasons (Saint Louis Browns 1898 & 1939; Baltimore 2018). The expansion era New York Mets (1962, 1963 & 1965) are the only other franchise with three 110 + loss seasons.
  • The Tampa Bay Rays need one more win to become the 23rd current franchise with at least one 100 win season. Expansion teams Colorado, Miami, Milwaukee, San Diego, Texas, Toronto & Washington are the other seven teams.

Reading that article, Preller and Tingler remind me of this scene from Boogie Nights.

Up to one year in jail, no slap on the wrist and this is his first DUI.

Probably wishes he was friends with Jerry at this point.

The District Attorney’s Office would only allow Scott to plead guilty to drunk driving, the top charge which carries up to a year in jail, in order to resolve the case stemming from Aug. 31.But Scott, 44, who made a virtual appearance in White Plains City Court on Thursday, refused to cop to the hardball offer, instead opting for trial.

“I don’t believe there will be a reduced offer,” Assistant District Attorney Patrick Macarchuk told Judge Eric Press. “I believe they want to try this case.”

AJ Preller with 9 lives. And people complain about JR’s loyalty 😂

Jerry brought in Krause when he bought the Bulls in 1985. He never fired a GM during his tenure as president (Jerry Krause resigned due to health issues in 2003, and Gar / Pax were around until Michael was able to fire the two a few more years after his father stepped down.

On the baseball front, Jerry pushed aside the solid executive he inherited in Roland Hemond with Hawk, who didn't last a year. Himes lasted five years and was tossed after he built the core of the solid teams in the 1990s, and replaced Schueler with Kenny after a decade.

78 Years, 3 executives fired (really 2, because Hawk should never have been hired in the first place and didn't even last a full season in the job)

Pete Rose chiming in on the Yankees...like Pete or not...this is a hilarious comment about Joey Gallo:

Then, he took his criticism of Gallo a step further.

“How does someone who didn't play every day strike out 213 times?” Rose says. “Ray Charles wouldn't strike out that much. I just can't imagine striking out 213 times without killing myself.”
