Not going to happen. The average starts across the league the last 2 years has creeper down to close to 5. The analytics say the strikeout is the best way so nearly every pitcher is sacrificing control to get more velocity.

People need to stop counting last years bogus sixty games schedule as some type of norm.

Baseball will resume if played on 2022, or 2023 once a CBA is finalized, and return to a more normal footing.

A team’s # 1-3 will be expected to average 6 IP, #s 4-5 5 IP. Plus Theo is working in the Commissioner’s Office to improve the game, and further restrictions on rosters like the number of pitchers allowed, and minimum hitters faced. This will bring a better balance to the game. An enforced 20 second pitch clock would help as well, to prevent pitchers from delaying and ramping up for max velocity each pitch.

This thread is exactly why I was in favor of he plan to have Kopech and Crochet start with the big league team. There will be plenty of opportunities to get multi-inning relief appearances and build up their innings. And they get to do it against big league hitters.

What is actually interesting is that because those guys are doing long outings, there were fewer tolerable middle relief guys available today, so one of the teams worst relievers came into a pressure situation and lost, for the second time this week. So yeah the long outings are helping in some games, but they’re also leaving the team with no options who can go on back to back days if the game stays close.

I don't think so. It was a trend prior to last year. I don't think its changing anytime soon.

I’m not going to worry too much about the starting pitching innings, as our defense is giving up an insane number of extra outs needed.  For every error made, there’s another play that should have been made.

I agree. This is the story line for the year. Regardless of any other factor, if the Sox had fewer unearned runs they would probably be 5-2

Just like I’m “wrong” that Grandal won’t sniff 120 games the rest of his deal? Or Keuchel and Grandal were overpays and severely restrict roster additions starting this offseason? Or will @Chicago White Sox chalk this up as “hindsight” when it to comes to pass.

Not that Hahn knows or EVER WILL know what to do in any scenario or amount of $ available.

Even Gar Pax and Ryan Pace shake their heads at Hahn’s level of incompetence over approaching a decade as GM, with no end in sight until Jerry croaks.

They really have to bring Lopez up, unfortunately.

He's the only one who can really cover so many innings in games like the situation today...in order to protect the rest of the bullpen.

Obviously, they're probably NOT going to pull the trigger QUITE so early, it is "just" 7 games and it's not like they are buried in the standings.

That said, the lack of urgency almost feels like the last two weeks of the 2020 season.   This whole thing of having to be so careful and overprotective with Crochet and Kopech requires the acquisition at some point of another stabilizing veteran presence like Cishek was supposed to be last year.

It's also quite obvious that Jimmy Buff Arms Cordero was abused last season, but he was that bridge pitcher that we're really lacking at the moment.

Ruiz/Lopez

Marshall/Foster (one has to be gone)

Kopech/Crochet

Heuer/Bummer/Hendriks

Did the entire first paragraph already happen? I don't think the season is over yet, to have predictions come true.

Right now the White Sox don't actually need someone to cover innings - they have that. Kopech and Crochet doing 2 inning batches has left everyone else with plenty of time off.

What they need is either more flexibility or better managing. If their manager is going to insist that Bummer and Hendricks can only pitch in the 8th and 9th, they simply need better middle relief. They don't have the pitchers in the bullpen to keep Kopech and Crochet on multi-days of rest, keep Hendricks and Bummer for the 9th inning and any save chance, and to win games when they need help. Even Fry would be useful here.

That's precisely the roles that Fry and Cordero occupied last year...

Get used to it. Teams are conditioning starters to go balls out until they die and don't like to have them face the lineup a third time. It isn't just the Sox, it's analytics telling all teams to do this.

Yeah I'm not talking complete games or anything but among playoff teams in the AL only the Rays  had more BP innings pitched last season.
