Eaton has been about as expected, maybe even a little better. Joc has been a major bust. Maybe there’s a reason it took so long for him to find an interested team last winter. Just hope we don’t hear about Joc anymore because of Eaton’s good play and not because of Joc’s crappiness. Statistics will always swing violently over the course of just a week in the first 6-8 weeks. The question about his offensive punch left remaining was just as concerning as staying on the field. That has at least partially been answered. Let’s also not forget that a big reason people were concerned with an Eaton signing was because of Adam’s history of missing time. He was still a rental at the time of the deal, just like Machado in 2018...so the likes of Cease, Lopez, Dunning or Crochet wouldn’t have interested the Dodgers? They run Scott Alexander out there as their primary LH high leverage guy. How can we keep claiming to have the most amazing collection of young talent in the history of the universe (jerksticks) yet we either can’t trade them out of necessity or they’re overvalued by the Sox...? That's a nice start from Adam relative to his main competition this offseason for the OF role, at least in the eyes of Soxtalk. I do agree that he's at a heightened risk of missing time (or losing production) due to injury but so far so good. So, Eaton turned out to be the best fit for Current needs. Brantley is the big miss...but Yermin may never happen if they signed him. Of course there were risks but it wasn't "stupid" to take a chance last year on him. I think an Eaton bounce back was as risky this year as a Mazara bounce back. He hit 1 home run and 30+ points lower than his career batting average and OPS 160 points lower than his career average. He already has more home runs this season in less than a third of the games he played last season. If he was the typical .750-.780 OPS guy last season that he had been for his entire career prior to 2020, I would have been fine with that. He sucked, and it sucked to trade for a guy who sucks. One of the pervading themes on Soxtalk is that a 24 year old is a finished product. Mazara's bWAR went from -0.3 to 0.5 to 1.0 in the years before we traded for him. As a GM you have two routes to follow, paying for past performance or trying to extrapolate where a player is going to end up...an offensively and defensively improving 24 year old lefty seemed like a reasonable bet.
