It is funny how you can have 13 pages of decently nuanced discussion (mostly @chw42 kicking ass) that arrives at an approximation of a board consensus that this is a solid if unspectacular move that will help the team then someone will waltz in and post "Horrible fucking trade, this guy sucks shit" and it feels just a little bit deflating.

here is a nuance then.. brian goodwin has a higher career ops

Hernandez is just an average player - he is an upgrade to garcia but that aint saying much.

he has a good glove yes - but our problem is offense and relief pitching.

Its an okay move IF there are other moves.. but watching this team since the all star break its going to take more if we are serious.

Damn 2 shoutouts in one thread. My Soxtalk posting career has peaked.

Johnson move shouldn't be lumped in. It was strictly procedural. They'll sign him to MiLB later in the year.

Ah. Than just Pilkington then?

Well this is interesting...he's like a slightly worse version of Escobar.

My thoughts exactly.

Does a package of Pilkington and Tyler Johnson seem better than what the DBacks got for Escobar?

They weren't trading for Escobar.  They think he's playing thru an injury.

This is the only shot they have to acquire a 2B.  There is no more waiver wire deadline.  If he blows out and misses a month they're fucked.  Yes any player can get injured but a guy who is already injured is much more likely to get injured (thanks cap'n obvious).  Why take that risk when they can acquire a similar player with a clean bill of health.

If you wanted this upgrade to be bigger and splashier, you probably don't realize how empty the farm system has become.

For what the team could afford to give up, a random live arm and taking on a contract, this is the type of upgrade that was available. And, it IS an upgrade, even if it isn't a massive one.

Bigger and splashier is what, Frazier? There's not a ton of guys available at 2B that's a whole lot better than Hernandez/Escobar.

Nice improvement for 2B and it moves Leury back to what he should be - a super sub.  Adds some much needed power the lineup.  And there is an option for 2022, which give sthe team some flexibility.

Yes, Frazier (bigger) and Story (splashier).

There's a reason Story hasn't been traded yet. Clearly the Rockies think he's worth more than he really is, just off the name alone. His numbers have been abysmal this year, especially for someone who gets to hit at Coors. No team is gonna pay him $6 million and give them good prospects hoping he turns it around.

Yes, I believe you're arguing with someone who agrees with you.

Haha I'm not arguing, just reiterating how stupid the Rockies FO is.

White Sox perspective

https://theathletic.com/2739085/2021/07/29/white-sox-acquire-cesar-hernandez-from-cleveland-to-fill-second-base-need-as-al-central-race-peters-out/?source=rss&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Quote

“César Hernández provides our club with a valuable combination of a power bat in the middle infield and Gold-Glove quality defense,” general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. “Adding a player like César gives Tony a strong and proven option at second base for the stretch run of the season and hopefully into October.”

Cleveland perspective

Quote

But really, for Cleveland, this trade isn’t about Hernández or even Pilkington. It’s about Giménez, Miller or someone else demonstrating he can blossom into a fixture at second base. It’s about cashing in on the significant trades from previous years that landed the club an abundance of middle-infield prospects in the first place.

“With all things being equal, if we had our preference,” Antonetti said, “it would probably be to not trade within the division, but in this case, it made the most sense.”

Miller is getting the first shot, Gimenez will not come up at least until after the Toronto series, since he is applying for permanent US residency, and cannot leave the country during the process.

My favorite day!

The armchair GM reaction day. All of a sudden everybody is an expert on Cesar Hernandez career strengths and weaknesses and have been scouting Pilkington down in AA and know his for sure potential!

Cesar Hernandez is an upgrade. He doesn't cost a ton. He has stolen bases and has had speed in the past, hitting the ball with more power this year, is serviceable and can slot in at the 9 spot. He's a one year commitment and is a fine get. Not every move needs to be a splash. I give it a solid B grade. Story would've been cool, but none of know the price on him, so let's just be happy!

You sir, are using way too much logic to have a long tenure here.

Hernandez should be the happiest guy in the world. Very few places are a bigger dump than Chicago but Cleveland does qualify.

Not exactly how it works.

I'm arguing his change in approach is not sustainable and when the fly balls stop going over the fence he'll be a replacement level player

At least he is familiar with AL pitching.   Of course the way things are going most of the lineup isn't familiar with any ptiching.
