Im sorry, in a long distance trip. Do we have kimbrel locked up for next tear?

He has a complicated option. It is one of 2 things - if he finishes 55 games this year, the option vests if he passes a physical, and he has finished 35 games so far. If he does not finish 55 games and the option does not vest, the option becomes a team option with a $1 million buyout. So, it's fairly team friendly - more team friendly than having him under contract in fact. In the case of injury, he can be let loose for $1 million.

I think there is a component of people not be ready for the next phase of White Sox baseball. It was a rude awakening for people. You spend years talking about "the core" and the future, what potential lineups will look like, etc......Nicky was in all of them. Obviously not on the same impact level of guys like Eloy, Moncada, Robert, Gio, etc.....but a guy that was in everyone's lineup. There is some shock to the system when you remove that. It wasn't part of the plan.

But we're here now. They built a team that is running away with the division and considered one of the World Series favorites. These are the type of moves teams in those positions make. It's go time. And in my opinion, and the opinion of Hahn and Kenny.....Craig Kimbrell helps the Sox get closer to another World Series more than Nicky does.

And it’s totally fair to feel uneasy about this.  IMO, we paid a significant cost to get Kimbrel and it could look ugly down the road.  I’ll admit I’ve been hesitant to give up too much of the future for a win now move, but I woke up this morning and saw what every other team was doing and was hoping there was one big trade left in us.  And Kimbrel is literally one of the most impactful players we could have acquired.  If you’re going to give up a valuable piece like Madrigal, at least cash in on a guy who greatly enhances your chances of winning a World Series.

I have been on the record plenty as one of the biggest Madrigal supporters on this board. Has anyone even questioned if the organization was worried about his recovery at all? And for a guy that was sold with ++ speed, his leg injury could impact that fallacy even more. Look, he is gonna be a .300 hitter his whole career. will we miss that. YEP. does it matter if they win a championship this season or next? NOPE. Hate the fWar longterm impact of this deal, but Hahn saying screw that shows just how much they mean business. and Kimbrel very well may be the closer in two months. that type of insurance is just unheard of come October.

Doubt the Cubs wouldn’t have had their doctors completely cleared Madrigal medically

We’re going to be paying Liam, Grandal, and Kimbrel around 47 million combined next year. 😳

They sure like to allocate what little money they have into players that don’t play every day.

In today's game with starters going fewer innings, the importance of a deep bullpen has significantly increased.

Totally agree.  Can't think of anyone who would make a bigger impact.  A definite all-in move.

If there is a major injury, the option doesn't vest even if he hits 55 GF

Don’t know why anybody would hate this trade.
Sox are basically playing games where the opponent has 6 innings to score vs. 9 for the Sox.

Nick Madrigal??? He’s a dime a dozen player.  I think there’s a much better chance he never makes an all-star team than turns into a top 5 2b.   No pop, sketchy defense, bad base runner, but can hit singles and people like to root for the little guy. This trade was a no-brainer.

Kimbtel for 2 years will have a much greater impact than Madrigal over 5.

Please note where it says "if he passes a physical" as this detail was included in that clause. He must pass a physical.

Pitching wins.  I think Lynn fits your narrative add his name and money.

I like Madrigal, but he was never going to be an impact player and I'm guessing the Sox know more about him than we do. Torn hamstrings are no joke.

Stoney said you make the best trades when you know more about the player than the other team does.

Assuming they pick up the two options they just got, they're basically right around $170 million next year give or take.

As is? Woof. Looks like we’ll need to be closer to $200M then.

Stone didn't "blast" Madrigal at all, and this is coming from a guy that really wishes Stone would just shut up.

That was as ice cold as someone can be about a player. Even Cubs fans are texting in saying they’re far less excited about the deal now after he said that.

Nearly $65M with Keuchel.

Ok, in a little more detail I was a little high on that, it depends on a lot of arbitration offers. They're at just under $140 assuming the 2 options are picked up. Giolito would bring that closer to $150 (a couple million under), but they have arbitration decisions to make on Burr, Engel, Marshall, and Lopez - if all of them are offered Arb, that probably pushes them closer to $160. Altogether I was probably $10-15 million high, but B-R doesn't even have the Lynn extension in there so I was eyeballing it.

It was basically, "I like Madrigal, but he was an overreach at 1-4." That's something the majority of baseball fans would agree with. I wouldn't say Stone "blasted" him at all. Maybe a bit too honest, but it wasn't mean spirited.

What are your estimates for the arb & pre-arb guys?

See more recent post. I was eyeballing it based on the B-R page, but then I realized it didn't even have Lynn's extension in there so I had to backtrack and go to Spotrac to get more updated numbers.
