Colome getting the job done. Polanco is having a hell of a season.

Weird way of thinking about this. But with ten teams reaching the playoffs having a top ten player instead of a top 12 or Top 15 can make a big difference. Of course it’s a balance.

9/7:

Magic number = 17

Cleveland lost Monday, so the lead is back up to 10. Magic number to eliminate Minnesota is 7. Minnesota could be eliminated as early as Friday.

Tampa leads the Yankees by 8.5, Boston by 9. At this rate, Tampa may clinch their division first.

Houston's lead over Seattle is 5.5, with Oakland 6 back.

Sox now 1 behind Houston for the 2nd seed and home field advantage for the ALDS.

Yankees now lead Boston by only 0.5 for the first spot, with Boston 3 clear of Toronto and Seattle for the second spot, Oakland at 3.5 back. The Sox are going to have a major impact on the Wild Card race over the next 6 days.

Over in the National League, the Giants are back in front of the Dodgers by 1. San Diego now leads Cincinnati by 1 game for the 2nd WC spot with Philly 2.5 back and St. Louis 3.5 back. Philly also within 1.5 of Atlanta for the division lead.

9/8:

Magic number = 15

Magic number to eliminate Minnesota is 6. Minnesota could be eliminated as early as Saturday.

The story of the night in the American League was division leaders winning and wild card contenders losing. All three division leads now at least 6.5 games, with time running out to run anybody down.

Yankees still lead Boston by only 0.5 for the first spot, with Boston 2 clear of Toronto and 3 clear of Seattle for the second spot, Oakland at 3.5 back.

Over in the National League, the Giants are  in front of the Dodgers by 1. San Diego and Cincinnati are tied for the 2nd WC spot with Philly 2.5 back and St. Louis and the Mets 3.5 back. Philly also within 2.5 of Atlanta for the division lead.

Man, has any team underperformed hype and expectations more consistently than the Mets?  I swear it goes back at least 20 years.

Some position players have underperformed, but Syndergaard being out the entire season and deGrom being out most of it have killed them. Really hard to win without your two best starters.

The ESPN standings have the White Sox playoff odds at 100%. They are crazy. The lead is only 11 and a scant 10 in the loss column with more than 3 weeks left to play, and a 5 game guaranteed to be swept series in Cleveland.. They need new mathematicians.

Sox and Astros magic numbers on each other for the 2-seed:

Hou-23

Sox-26

Houston won the season series right? So if they have the same record at the end of the season and they play each other in the 1st round, wouldn't Houston have the homefield advantage for the series?

Yes, and these numbers take that into account.
