9/9:

Magic number = 14

Magic number to eliminate both Minnesota and Kansas City is 6. Either could be eliminated as early as Sunday.

Sox still 1 behind Houston for the #2 seed.

We have a new leader in the Wild Card race. Boston has jumped 0.5 game ahead of New York. Toronto 1.5 out of the 2nd spot, Seattle 2.5 out and Oakland 3 out.

Over in the National League, the Giants are  in front of the Dodgers by 2. San Diego now 1 up on Cincinnati for the 2nd WC spot with Philly 3 back and St. Louis  3.5 back. Philly also within 3 of Atlanta for the division lead.

The wild card races should be fun....who is going to get hot and sneak in?

The Yankees play the Rays the last series of the season. Rays will almost certainly have the #1 seed locked up. Do they play their A lineup and pitchers to try to knock the Yankees out or do they rest up for the playoffs?

On the NL side, the Padres are clearly the better team but the Reds have the more favorable schedule.

Kansas City’s poor play and Minnesota’s winning vs. Cleveland has now brought parity in the race to be eliminated first. Detroit still has an outside chance.

  • 1. Kansas City 6
  • 1. Minnesota 6
  • 3. Detroit 8
  • 4. Cleveland 14

The road series in Texas, Detroit and Cleveland is the likely clinch location, with the home series against Anaheim a possibility.

For the top two AL Playoff seeds:

  1. Tampa Bay 16 (White Sox 30)
  2. Houston 23 (White Sox 25)

We'd basically have to win out to clinch during the next homestand and Cleveland would have to lose all their games as well. I think it's much more likely we clinch in Detroit.

The Wild Card race is literally wild. Boston leads New York by 1, with Toronto 0.5 game behind New York and Oakland and Seattle both 1 back.

Over in the National League, the Giants are  in front of the Dodgers by 2.5. San Diego and Cincinnati back in a tie for the 2nd WC spot with St. Louis 3 back and Philly 3.5 back. Philly also within 4.5 of Atlanta for the division lead.

Cleveland is going to catch us has become => We have no chance in the first round of the playoffs.

Can’t wait for that myth to be dispelled just like the first one has been.

I would like to have the home field advantage in that first round instead of play the first 2 games at Enron Field.  Our Sox do play better on the road.

Hell of a run by Toronto...do they have enough pitching to be dangerous in the postseason if they get there?  They sure as hell have the offense.

The Sox have clinched at worst a tie over the Minnesota Twins, the 0 will turn to eliminated with the next Sox win or Twins loss. This applies to all teams (the Sox magic number is 10 to eliminate Cleveland, 9 to clinch a tie with Cleveland).

  • 0 Minnesota
  • 3 Kansas City
  • 5 Detroit
  • 9 Cleveland

AL Seeding:

  • 27 Tampa Bay
  • 22 Houston

Six teams are already eliminated from a division championship:

Arizona, Baltimore, Chicago Cubs, Colorado, Pittsburgh, Texas.

Minnesota (1), San Diego (3), Kansas City (4), Washington (4), Detroit (6), Saint Louis (6), Cincinnati (6), Los Angeles Angels (8) may all join these six later this week, leaving sixteen teams vying for the six division titles.

Was looking at the schedules til the end of the season for AL East and West, and MLB actually has a lot of drama built in.  Yankees Boston and Toronto are all going to be going at it in the final 9 games, Tampa will be mixing it up too.  Houston and Oakland play 6 of their last 9 against each other.

the wild card is really up for grabs right now
