What would TA's pro fate have been if Tatis hadn't been traded?

Presuming Tatis developed exactly the same in the Sox system, he probably would have taken over 2B sometime in 2019 and or worked in RF.  TA was pretty established as the starting SS entering '19 even before he made his massive leap offensively.  Yoan had already been working at 3rd over that winter and I doubt Tatis breaks camp with the big club at that point in the rebuild.

This is a good analysis. Unlikely the Sox would've pushed him into that role so soon. They tend to only do so when the team is contending (Sale, Crochet, Vaughn), but otherwise play a bit of the game.

So looking at 2018 roster you had Moncada already logging 149 games at 2B. Holding everything constant in terms of Tatis development? You likely just keep Moncada at 2b and you see that Yolmer Sanchez logged 141 innings at 3b. In RF you had  87 games of Avi Garcia and 43 of Palka. Based on Tatis arm and athleticism? I think it's fair to say he would've slotted in 3B, possibly with some OF time. Your top OF prospects were Eloy and Robert at the time.

Not to play butterfly effect and "what if" even more since it hurts already, but seeing as you have Moncada at 2b in 2018, and you have Tatis rocketing through your system? The 2018 draft looks different too. There would be no need to take a Madrigal if you already had Moncada penciled in at 2b. Now Burger tore his achilles the 1st time that spring, so maybe the Sox would be looking for additional IF help, but likely with Tatis starting his rise, plus Anderson and Moncada across the IF we would turn to OF help. Mind you, we traded for Rutherford the year before and Basabe was still a thing along with Adolfo, but I'd guess we'd go OF, possibly more pitching. Don't shoot the messenger -- Jarred Kelenic -- pretty local guy -- was picked at #6 that year. Pitching wise? Ryan Weathers, Grayson Rodriguez, Logan Gilbert, Matthew Liberatore, and Brady Singer were some of the next pitchers picked. Based on where we were in the rebuild? I don't exactly think we'd pick any of those HS guys ... which leaves Logan Gilbert, Travis Swaggerty, Brady Singer as possibilities. Maybe Jonathan India too if we did indeed go infield help.

Enjoy what we have though, because who knows how all this plays out in the end. That's life. But ...

Anderson SS

Tatis 3B

Eloy LF

Abreu 1B

Grandal C

Moncada 2B

Robert CF

Vaughn DH

Kelenic RF

good thing sox got rid of Tatis he has poor twtw padres aren't looking so hot right now because of poor twtw

Yes, they have had stretches this year where they actually played better without him because everyone keeps waiting for him to be Mike Trout and do something dramatic when he's in the line-up...he was 0/6 tonight, tied the game in the Bottom of the 15th against Knebel, but they still lost.

It's hard to win with 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 starting pitchers or whatever they're down to.  When all is said and done, they're probably going to wish they held on to Quantrill and Patino instead of going for it this year.  No matter what happens, not making the WC game if the Reds are the opponent is going to be a pretty massive disappointment, considering less than two weeks ago they were 17 games over .500 and Tatis had one of the best individual games of the entire MLB season.

Even Dodgers vs. Padres head up, it's still the Padres up 7-5 in the season series.   Dodgers swept, then SD won 7 out of 8, then the Dodgers the last two in SD, including the crazy game last night (now it's 4:26 p.m. China time and the game just finished about 30 minutes ago.)

Tatis would be our 2B.  Or maybe 3B and Moncada never moves to 3B (and hopefully in this alternate universe Yoan improved at 2B).

But if Tatis is on this team, the whole complexion of the roster is so different.  Its really not even worth worrying about.  It is what it is.  Sucks to lose a generational talent like that, but the Sox are, and are going to continue to be just fine without him.

Given what it took for MJ to get paid fair market value, ain't no way in hell Reinsdorf would be paying a 22 year old 300+ million.

Getting traded was best thing that could have possibly happened to FTJR.

Mis-directing ill-will towards him is grossly unfair.

These Reinsdorf sycophants are nauseating.

FTJR is a great talent and a potential first ballot HOFamer.

In my book the Tatis-for-Shields transaction is easily the leading candidate for the worst trade in at least CWS history and the fact it was consummated by this particular regime of incompetence  is certainly not a surprise.

I wish FTJR well.

An infield of Moncada-Tatis-Anderson-Abreu would have been spectacularly entertaining.

I agree that JR would not have paid FTjr $300M, mainly because he would not have had to do so to have FTjr on the roster during this contention window.  I am actually surprised SD gave him that contract this early in his career.  He has yet to prove he can remain healthy enough to make it worthwhile.

Sox have never had a guy as young as Tatis killing it in the minors like he was at 18 and 19 yrs. old. Easily over 1/3 of his hits where for extra bases playing SS. You never know how they would have reacted. Even now being 22 with all our young stars he would still be the youngest guy on the team. Hard to think that he's still 22 with everything he has gone through.

The Padres actually seem to have brought him up at the right time. He was a mature hitter and getting stronger. Even this year through all the injuries he has 100 hits with 58 of them being doubles or HR's. So basically better than every other hit is either a double or a HR !

Who knows maybe Tim would have been traded or asked to switch positions or Tatis would do the same.

Have a feeling he would be playing CF instead of Robert...reverse Alexei move.

It is pretty crazy if you look at his career homer and SB numbers, compared with Robert, who is older. It seems like Tatis has been around forever, but really just two half seasons and then 1/4 of 2021 missed.
