Guardians getting sued for the name

Recommended Posts

The roller derby team and protentional legal issues were noted during the rollout earlier this year, and reiterated today.

https://fox8.com/sports/there-cannot-be-two-cleveland-guardians-teams-in-cleveland-roller-derby-team-sues-baseball-franchise/

Quote

The roller derby team told the baseball team they would be willing to sell the rights, the suit states but did not feel they were offered a fair amount for them.

After the derby team sent back a counteroffer, the suit claims the baseball team used a very similar “Winged G” logo that the Cleveland Guardians Roller Derby team had sent them when responding to the request about intellectual property.

Expecting Manfred to chime in and state the team will now be named the Savages, Redskins, or some other name that he will claim Native American groups in the area are fine with, matching his comments yesterday regarding alleged Native American support for the Braves and "The Chop"

Having worked on new identities such as the Vegas Golden Knights I find this so crazy, and such an embarrassing thing to happen to a MLB team.

I mean we know this will just be settled and nobody will remember.

While I appreciate the little roller woman fighting back here, I do not think that they have much of a chance against MLB paid lawyers

hope the roller derby girls win. They should've gone with the Spiders in the first place.

It would be awesome if they end up changing it to something else instead of the dumb name they landed on.

Guardians is a horrible name to begin with, just go with the Cleveland Mistakes.

Seriously, if they can't use the Guardians due to legal issues, I think the Cleveland Lakers would work, makes more sense than the Los Angeles Lakers who brought that name with them when they moved from Minneapolis in 1960.

It sounds a lot like they didn't think to investigate if someone else owned the name, and if they did, that they didn't really care enough to make sure they had it before they did this announcement.

If they change it, those jerseys increase in value down the road

My hate for the Chop & Chant has nothing to do with Native Americanism. Great for the Florida State Seminoles - sucks for a MLB team. This is baseball not college football.
Terrible towels and shaking pom-poms is somehow different.

The only issue here is deciding the size of the check the baseball Guardians will be writing to the roller derby Guardians.  They knew this would happen all along.

The Chop is awesome.

It allows white people the comfort of cartoonish-ly stereotyping Native American chanting.

Does it allow black people to do the same or do only the white fans chop?

Mods, are we seriously allowing this racism? This poster is categorizing an entire race of people.

The team intentionally moved to a 89% white area, with no public transportation, similar to if the Sox moved to Plainfield in Kendall County.

They’re suing the Indians. Cleveland’s response should be a simple, “Who are the Indians?”

They are still the Indians.

Did the fans only start to chop once the team moved to a "white area"? Do the black and Hispanic fans not chop?

Is the Bears move to AH about race too? What a joke.

Nah, the joke is your faux outrage in this thread and claiming this trashy chant entering it's 4th decade is "awesome".

It's an embarrassment to the sport, and just another example of why baseball, a great game, continues to lose interest and audience year after year. Young and diverse people MLB gives lip service to trying to attract to stave off dying interest in this sport cringe when they witness this shit. There are no positive connotations continuing with this garbage, same as waving a confederate flag at an auto race.
