You're right, I should have clarified. I think his average defense is a big upgrade over Sheets/Vaughn, and him being a lefty is the cherry on top. They desperately need more lefty bats. I don't think you can roll Gavin Sheets out in RF on a regular basis.

Honestly, I'm OK with a starting pitcher as well if they upgrade at 2B with a lefty bat.

Fair enough. I disagree but I get it where you’re coming from.

Just don’t like the fit. Think we’d be very disappointed with the fit, and that could turn into a bad contract quick if it doesn’t work out.

If you believe the offense was limited by being too right handed, too many unproductive outs, and too many ground balls (as I do), the here is how conforto fits:

- 120 wRC+ vs RHP even in his down year (and he was significantly better outside of an atrocious June where his hammy was injured)

- his gb rate is nothing to write home about but better that the Sox average

- Has never posted less than a 10% walk rate since rookie year

Thats all an improvement, and at 29 with very recent, big success offensively there is upside to getting good power in our outfield.

But a big part of this is compared to what? Few additions check off those boxes, and he doesn’t subtract Vaughn or Sheets.

Very solid post mags. You make a good argument for Conforto….just worries me as the big swing this offseason (because I have to imagine that’s their big swing if they sign Conforto)

It's such a white Sox move though. They're never in on the biggest FAs. Scherzer is a pipe dream. Jerry isn't signing an old pitcher to a huge contract. Conforto I can see actually happening.

I agree with you on Scherzer. And I also agree on Conforto feeling like a Sox move, which scares me.

Who was the last FA the Sox signed that got better when they came here? Dye?

I don’t see Conforto as a white sox move, I see schwarber as a white sox move

Rodon, 2021, haha.

Dye and AJ, I guess....you can argue about Pods, certainly 2005 better than 2004.

Quentin was a trade, same with Floyd and Danks back in the day.

Robertson held his own but certainly wasn't a bargain...in fact, most would argue it was a bit of an overpay.

Then you have to fall back to "international free agents" like Abreu and Robert.

Not at all what I was talking about, good god.

You really believe that Brooks Boyer's ability to market the team doesn't ever enter a conversation...?  It's certainly not a PRIMARY consideration, or even in the Top 5, but it's somewhere on the list.

Baseball is still the entertainment business, and position players are obviously easier to sell to the fan base.

But no, nobody will be all that excited about Schwarber's addition because we already have 7 DH's on the roster.  Although Sheets and Collins are the only left-handed ones, not counting Grandal as SH there (yet) unless they shock the world and add an everyday catcher instead.

"Well, we better check with Brooks about this guy's marketability before we give him an offer"

Yes, there's the kill two birds/one stone effect with Baez, Soler and Schwarber in terms of the marketing/former Cubs angle.

If you think anyone in the fucking world outside yourself and hankchifan would buy more tickets because the Sox signed Jorge Soler then you’ve lost all touch with reality.  And if we ever sign someone because of the “former Cubs angle” Hahn should be fired on the spot.

For our free agent signings?  100% no.  Maybe when you’re talking about the Machado’s and Harper’s of the world, but even then we pursued the far less marketable guy.

I don't like the Conforto fit.

He turned down the QO. Yes, he could have misread the market, but right now Boras is working with much more information than I am and think he can get a long-term deal.

The Sox seem like they will spend but we all agree it probably won't reach the levels we'd all like them to reach. So with that in mind, what are they getting with Conforto?

- Mediocre to average defense in RF

- Coming off a very disappointing 2021, which was his contract year

- Will be 29 when the season starts

- How many offensive free agents have come to the Sox and gotten significantly better upon arrival?

With Rodon seemingly out of the picture.....spend the money on another starter. Make this rotation scary with something like Scherzer-Gio-Lynn-Kopech-Cease. Go out and trade some assets for a 2B, and run with Vaugh/Sheets in RF.

I like this strategy.

Power, OBP, lefty, plays right. I'm totally on board with Conforto.

I like Conforto - but I think it is too much money for a player who is good, not great.  The fit etc is not bad...I just prefer shorter term deals or saying screw it and signing Scherzer to something stupid for 2 years (not that he will take it).
