Wrong. Yaz accounted for 15% of the White Sox team walks. 87 walks, 23.2% walk rate. Him falling off a cliff would absolutely drag down the White Sox BB% a significant amount.

Not sure what is "wrong."

If you removed 40 walks from Yaz last year, the Sox would still have ranked in the top 12 in BB rate.

Robert and Abreu's rates are probably down a bit, too.

But almost as big as Grandal's decline is missing Moncada in the lineup for a month in terms of OBP/walks.

I think Moncada is the big difference. Not only was he exceptionally patient last year, he has been replaced mostly by Jake Burger who is in the following percentiles:

  • K% - 15th percentile
  • BB% - 9th percentile
  • Whiff% - 6th percentile
  • Chase Rate - 6th percentile

Also, José Abreu is actually being MORE patient at the plate this season. José's underlying statistics actually look pretty good, so I'm not too worried about him.

Or Liam has had a heavy workload the last five years and is slowly losing his stuff and location as a nature part of the aging process.

How did Katz treat him differently this year?

Isn’t the lockout, cold weather and abbreviated spring training just as likely to be factors in his FB velo being down 2-3 mph?

Australia is a warm weather country.

Not having Moncada and trading away Our best OBP guy Madrigal has not helped.

It depends on how much he falls off, obviously. Removing 40 walks still gives him a BB% of 12.5%~. That's still above average. Give him an 9.75% walk rate, which would rank 3rd best for a team average BB%, and it drops the Sox to 15th.  Give him a league average BB% of 8.7% and it drops another spot I'd imagine.

15% of a teams walks by one player is pretty significant. If you replace him with a player with the league average walk rate, it drops the Sox from 4th to 15th or 16th. That's a lot.

Not really; you wouldn't expect an even distribution of walks at 11% per starter and you'd expect some fluctuation. Because Yaz missed so much time last year, his impact wasn't as significant. Moncada had 3 fewer walks than Grandal. Also, Grandal going to 9.75% would be pretty crazy given his career % is 14.8, and every year but one he's been over 13% and this year he's started slow and he's still at 12%. That's why I removed 40.

How do you yourself define "carrying" in terms of a player carrying BB% for a team? The guy lead the team in walks and lead the team in BB% by far.

The team drops from 4th to 11th-13th when you chop off 40 walks, giving him an BB% of 12.5% as you stated. That seems pretty significant.

Semantics.

But the team is in the bottom 3 this year, not the middle of the pack at 11-13 as you'd expect to see based on your own math at 12.5%. So Yaz isn't the reason the team isn't in the top 3 this year. That was my entire point.

Well, Hendriks definitely brought his A game yesterday. We will soon see how consistent he is with that against less high profile teams and hitters.

You pull Banks after an 8-3 lead is lost due to 2 errors and Rosairo hitting a pitch he had no business swinging at. Yeah that'll instill confidence through the ranks.

FTLR

Oh please…. Pulling banks was the right call and if he didnt, as things were clearly falling apart and the all star closer waiting in the wings, he would have been rightfully criticized here.  TLR did NOTHING wrong.

LOL I was waiting for this thread to get bumped when the winning streak ended. Zero posts in here when we are winning.

Long live the LaRusstans!
