Again then why didn’t he do it when 1st base wasn’t open? If Turner was a near lock to do damage even at 1-2, and Muncy was an easy out, who cares if you put a runner in scoring position. The other thing is you had an umpire calling pitches 2 or 3 inches off the plate strikes all afternoon.

At 1-2 if you want to walk the guy, just throw outside to see if he chases. Duh TLR.

https://www.mlb.com/news/white-sox-intentionally-walk-trea-turner-on-1-2-count

White Sox manager Tony La Russa took umbrage postgame when questioned about intentionally walking Trea Turner with a 1-2 count in the sixth inning of the Dodgers' 11-9 victory Thursday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.

His reaction came after many fans and pundits disagreed across social media concerning the move, which was followed by Max Muncy’s three-run home run off left-handed reliever Bennett Sousa. But La Russa confidently stood by his call, much like a manager who has built confidence over the years behind three World Series titles and 2,847 career victories.

In fact, he found it hard to believe the question was being asked.

With 2 outs runners are going full gas right on contact. They don't have to hesitate to check whether or not it might be a ball in the air that could be caught. In any case, not even bothering to use your best lefty and then making a decision based on platoon advantage makes it even worse.

The question was why wait for first base to be open? I said to create a force at any base. Your answer to why wait for first base to be open is because  with two outs runners are going full gas right on contact. They don't have to hesitate etc.

I'm not certain those are great reasons to walk someone when first base is open.

The count means nothing. You risk a wild pitch by trying to half-ass get Turner to bite on pitches way out of the zone.

The decision LaRussa had was whether it would be better for a pretty weak LH pitcher to face Trea Turner or Max Muncy.

He made the wrong call and opened himself up to wild criticism from his most ardent critics.

Trea hit a laser home run the night before so that may have had something to do with the decision. Easy one to criticize but there is a school of thought in many sports that states that you just don't let certain star players beat you, and take your chances with the rest.  So Trea Turner vs Max Muncy?

I was wondering who the water carrier of the night would be.

So why did the decision change after the wild pitch? Everyone still was hitting from the same side of the plate and pitching with the same arm.

Why did he lie to us about the stat lines?

Who knows. I see zero logic in it. Why even throw the first 3 pitches?

Exactly right. In his post game comments TLR seemed to think he was a demon hitter on 1 or 2 strikes to lefties and that was his justification and seemed confused that anyone thought his action strange, just the mad ramblings of a senile drunk.

Hiring La Russa to manage a young, exciting ball club that had a chance to take over the city will forever go down as one of the worst decisions in baseball history.  That and refusing to seriously pursue Bryce Harper when there was little competition for him.

This - everyone got pissed about Machado (who I was all for too) - but Harper was exactly what this franchise needed. A face of baseball - that true edgy superstar who swung from left side. Machado was better player but marketing wise - Harper would have been huge.

They had so many elite options at their finger tips and they pissed it away and than TLR uggh. And menechino is awful. After I saw those Marlins splits on ground ball rates etc - how could anyone have hired him.
