By the way…

If Bummer was on the IL and Banks was up, he could have come into the 10th on Saturday, and just doing the best he could would probably have had a better chance of winning that game than Foster and Ruiz both pitching their 3rd games in 4 days.

Foster and Ruiz going for the 4th time in 5 days again got shelled in extra innings today. If Banks was available yesterday just as a sacrifice, those guys would have been notably more rested and maybe give us a chance in the 11th and 12th today.

Thats 2 straight losses where this “he’s hurt but not on the IL” lunacy was a solid factor. Nice work to whoever thinks that is a funny game!

Yeah, if you aren't 100% certain that a pitcher's injury/soreness is gong to keep him out 3 or fewer days, you need to IL him, especially in this age when starters average < 6 innings.

They are almost going to have to make another roster move after the last few days, even if it is just to call up the guy they just claimed.

They have no starter for Wednesday right now. The options on the roster are - rest Lambert and Lopez the next 2 days and use them, or do Giolito on short rest Wednesday followed by Cueto on Friday. Otherwise, they can IL Kopech and get Martin back up.

Yes, they are short handed as it is. You can't afford going into games with 23-24 healthy players on a regular basis, losing an additional 4 (SPs not starting) and a few bullpen guys used up the past few games. You need to have at least six bullpen guys every game available when you are going 12 hitters, 5 starters and 9 relievers for your active roster.

Also know this is an unlikely unpopular statement, but I would have kept Keuchel until he was the seventh available SP, for long relief outings. Once you had Giolito, Lynn, Cease, Kopech, Cueto and Velazquez or Davis healthy and available (the sixth in Charlotte), which has never happened yet, then you had the luxury of cutting Keuchel.

June 1-12 - 12 Days, 11 Games / 55 1/3 IP:

Six Appearances: Matt Foster (3 2/3 IP, 12.27 ERA).

Five Appearances: Kendell Graveman (5 IP, 1.80 ERA); Jose Ruiz (5 IP, 7.20 ERA); Bennett Sousa (4 1/3 IP, 18.69 ERA); Reynaldo Lopez (4 1/3 IP, 8.31 ERA).

Four Appearances: Kyle Crick (6 1/3 IP, 1.42 ERA); Liam Hendriks (4 IP, 0.00 ERA); Aaron Bummer (3 1/3 IP, 0.00 ERA).

Three Appearances: Tanner Banks (4 IP, 0.00 ERA).

Two Appearances: Jimmy Lambert (3 IP, 0.00 ERA); Parker Markel (2 1/3 IP, 0.00 ERA).

One Appearance: Davis Martin (5 IP, 3.60 ERA); Johnny Cueto (5 IP; 5.40 ERA).

In hindsight they could have used Keuchel to eat innings out of the bullpen because Velasquez went down a week later, but they needed his spot for an actual reliever.

Lynn wasn't back yet. If you are counting on Cueto, Velasquez and Martin as three of your six available SP options, also knowing you are limiting Kopech's innings this season, it's a thin plan at this point if you are attempting to win "multiple championships".

On this Board, I said to keep him until June or July, just don't keep him in the rotation unless you are once again down to 4 other SP options, it wasn't hindsight. You're going to have to eat a few games a month down big, and those are the games you use Keuchel 3-5 innings, and not care about what it does to his stats. Saving your bullpen is very important, especially this season with the limited Spring Training, and starters not working deep into games.
