A rebuilding year for the Sox, as the team was never a serious contender but still managed to finish 2nd (80-82) in a week AL central, 9 games behind the leading Indians. For the First time since 1990 Frank Thomas wasn’t the big star on offense having the worst season average wise in his carrer. Thomas hit .265 with 29 homers and 109 RBI’s. The big star on offense was leftfielder Albert Belle who hit .328 with a club record 49 homers and 152 RBI’s and adding 48 doubles. 3rd Baseman Robin Ventura came back from injury and hit .263 with 21 homers and 91 RBI’s. Leadoff Hitter Ray Durham (.285) hit 19 homers and stole 36 bases. Rookie Magglio Ordoñez hit .282 with 14 homers and 65 RBI’s, while another Rookie Shortstop Mike Caruso hit .306 and stole 22 bases. CenterFielder Mike Cameron had trouble making contact and slumped to .210 with only 8 homers and stuck out 101 times. Rookie Jeff Abbott (.279) played well as a part timer and hit 12 homers and drove in 41 runs in only 244 at bats. On the Mound the team struggled, Jaime Navarro (8-16) was hit hard and ended up with a 6.36 ERA. James Baldwin was 13-6 but struggled too. Rookie Lefthander Mike Sirotka (14-15) led the team in Innings Pitched and Jason Bere made a comeback but was released July 16th. A couple of more Rookies Came up and pitched well, right hander John Snyder went 7-2 and Lefty Jim Parque 7-5. Out of the Bullpen Matt Karchner had 11 saves but was eventually traded to the Cubs and Bill Simas had 18 saves after taking over for Karchner and another rookie Bob Howry added 9.

11 saves out of maybe 678 mound appearances and 667 losses?

Damn, he was bad.

Trading him for Garland was one of the best all time trades ever.

That was perhaps the quiestest big season ever. he did most of it after the All Star break when all the attention was on the north side.
