Emerged as Texas’ No. 1 starter and one of the top starting pitchers in the country during the 2005 season ... displays maturity and poise beyond his years … combines both power and finesse in his game … attacks the strike zone and mixes up an arsenal of pitches that have good movement and explode on hitters … a student of the game … will be expected to fill his role at the top of the starting rotation in 2006.

2005 Season

· Collected a 12-4 record and a 2.92 ERA over his 26 appearances.

· Tied the UT single season record for most starts with a team-best 23.

· Ranked seventh nationally while pacing all UT hurlers with 12 wins. Also led the team in both complete games (2) and innings (138.2).

· Worked at least six innings in 14 of his starts, including 10 in a row at one point.

· Tossed one complete-game shutout and combined on five others.

· Ranked among the top 10 league hurlers in wins (t1st), innings (1st), starts (1st), complete-game shutouts (t1st) and complete games (t3rd).

· Went 5-2 with the third-best ERA (2.49) on the staff during Big 12 play while making nine starts, posting both of his complete games and striking out 38 over 61.1 innings of work.

· Held opponents to a .248 batting average against while finishing ranked among the top 10 conference pitchers in ERA (6th), wins (t2nd), innings (5th), starts (t1st) and complete games (t2nd) during conference action.

· Started a team-best six games and went 3-1 while combining on one shutout and striking out 24 over 31.1 innings during postseason play.

 

2005 Highlights

· Struck out a career-best eight over seven innings versus UNLV (2/13).

· Limited No. 5 Stanford to one run on six hits over five innings while striking out three and walking none en route to earning a victory.

· Selected as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on March 15 after leading the Longhorns to a pair of shutout victories over No. 5 Rice (3/9) and Purdue (2/13) by pitching a combined nine scoreless frames.

· Hurled his first career complete game as well as the first complete-game shutout for a UT pitcher since March 13, 2004, opposite Kansas State (4/1) as he allowed only three hits and fanned five batters.

· Allowed only two runs on six hits while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision at No. 4 Nebraska (4/8).

· Combined on a 2-0 shutout against Oklahoma (4/15) as he hurled eight scoreless innings while fanning three Sooners batters.

· Tossed his second complete-game effort of 2005 at Oklahoma State (4/22) by allowing only two earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven.

· Went seven innings and fanned five versus No. 14 Missouri (4/29).

· Worked six shutout innings opposite Texas A&M (5/21) in which he surrendered only eight hits and struck out three.

· Scattered six hits over seven innings while striking out seven opposite No. 1 Tulane (6/20) during College World Series (CWS) action to combine on the Horns’ first CWS shutout victory since 1983.

· Earned the win in the CWS national title game versus No. 6 Florida (6/26) to lift UT to its sixth National Championship as he struck out a career-high eight over 6.2 innings.

· Garnered CWS All-Tournament Team honors after making two starts in Omaha and posting a 2-0 record to go along with a 1.32 ERA and 15 strikeouts over a team-high 13.2 innings.

· Earned Summer All-America honors by going 4-0 with a 1.44 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 25 innings, which spanned four starts, for USA Baseball National Team head coach Steve Smith over the summer. Also helped Team USA rattle off 10 wins to end the summer and finish at 16-4 overall.

 

FRESHMAN (2004)

· Freshman All-American - Collegiate Baseball

2004 Season

· Finished fourth on the team with seven wins, which came over 25 appearances, including eight starting assignments.

· Boasted the third-lowest ERA among UT starters at 3.25, as he combined on two shutouts, tallied one save, held opponents to a .233 batting average against and fanned 34 over 52.2 innings.

· Posted a 2-0 record during Big 12 action as he made six relief appearances against league opponents while striking out three over 8.1 innings. Also held Big 12 foes to a .235 batting average against.

 

2004 Highlights

· Tossed seven scoreless frames while allowing only three hits and striking out four to pick up the win in his first career start at Hawaii (2/1).

· Threw 1.1 frames without allowing a run, hit or walk to combine with two other pitchers on a shutout of San Diego State (2/29).

· Came in on relief to earn the win against No. 3 Rice (3/2) with the Horns down by two runs and recorded the one out he was called on to get in order to allow UT to rally back from five runs down for an 8-7 win.

· Earned his first career save versus Sam Houston State (3/6) as he threw two frames, scattered three hits and allowed only one run.

· Helped UT earn a 10-6 victory in 20 innings at Kansas State (4/9) by tossing 4.1 frames in relief and allowing no walks and only one run on four hits while striking out a pair.

· Came on in relief versus No. 3 Rice (4/13) and tossed three scoreless innings while allowing only one hit, one walk and fanning three.

· Tallied his seventh win of the year by tossing one inning of relief versus No. 16 Nebraska (4/24) in which he struck out one batter, assisted on throwing out a runner at home and induced a groundout.

· Worked a scoreless inning of relief versus No. 15 Vanderbilt (6/11)

during the Austin NCAA Super Regional.

· Pitched in relief a total of six times while also making one start for head coach Greg Kings’ Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2004.

· Helped the Mets reach the semifinals of the league playoffs with 22

victories as he struck out 28 while walking only nine over 20.2 innings.

 

HIGH SCHOOL

· A three-year letterwinner and All-District pitcher/infielder for head coach Rocky Manuel’s Bellaire High School Cardinals (2001-2003).

· Batted .375 as a sophomore and helped the Cardinals post a 34-2 record en route to claiming the District 18-5A title and reaching the regional finals.

· Notched a 7-1 overall record and a 1.27 ERA over 48 innings of work as well as a .390 batting average on his way to garnering second-team All-Greater Houston honors in 2002. Also aided Bellaire in capturing its second straight District 18-5A Championship and in reaching the regional quarterfinals while compiling a 26-7 record.

· Participated in the Texas Pro Scout Association All-Star Game at Minute Maid Park as well as the 2002 Area Code Games and the 2002 Goodwill Games for the United States against Japan as a junior. Was also recognized as a top 50 selection during the 2002 Area Code Games.

· Posted 10 wins against two losses while hitting a career-best .395 as a senior while boasting a 1.10 ERA and tallying 96 strikeouts over 64 frames. Also earned 2003 5A All-State honors and first-team All-Greater Houston accolades while assisting the Cardinals in amassing a 30-4 overall record and laying claim to their third consecutive District 18-5A title with an undefeated district campaign.

· Recipient of the 2003 Houston Athletic Committee Scholar Athlete Award.

· Selected in the 18th round (No. 529 overall) of the 2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the New York Mets.

· Pitched and played shortstop for head coach Clay Hill’s Columbia Angels (Houston, Texas) during the summers of 2002 and 2003.

Born Kyle Roberts McCulloch on March 20, 1985, in Houston, Texas … parents are Mike and Judy McCulloch … has one older brother, Jeff … his dad, Mike, attended The University of Texas and played football from 1970-72 … is a corporate communication major.

I believe he was a highly regarded pitcher as a sophomore and was injured and was only okay as a junior, but the sox drafted him hoping he would regain his form and become a top pitcher again, I could be wrong on much of this info, anyone with a stronger collegiate baseball background want to help out?

I’m betting we see either a non-merit based promotion for McCulloch to AAA or a move to the bullpen soon. I get the impression that the organization is very disgruntled with him at this point, and will either want to move him up to see how he reacts, or try to give him a chance to find a chance at a foothold in the pen.
