Or by Bare Naked Ladies.

Actually, I think the version you're talking about is the one by the Gourds. When it was on limewire, it was mistakenly labeled as being by Barenaked Ladies, Phish, etc.

I'll throw another one out there, since not many here are country fans. Amarillo By Morning by George Strait, which is considered one of the greatest country songs of all time. It was originally done by Chris LeDoux.

When I saw this thread, this is the song that came to my mind 1st, and didn't really think it would be in here. Good call.

Thanks. I love their version.

This is an example I always bring up whenever I spout my "there's no such thing as a bad song, just bad EXECUTION of a song" theory.

Of course I was, I'm the biggest NR whore around these parts!

They're "back for good", y'know.....playing a date in April at the House Of Blues with the Effigies. If I wasn't such an anti-social, hermitic curmudgeon, maybe I'd go.

Well if you want to discuss some more . . .

Refuge by Melissa Etheridge

And a reverse cover by the same artist. Bob Welch when he was with Fleetwood Mac (pre Stevie Nicks era) wrote Sentimental Lady and it was recorded on the last album he appeared on. He later had a top 10 with the same song as a solo artist. While his solo effort sold more copies, his Fleetwood Mac version is waaaay better. We could go on and on about songs where the cover sucked, but I can't think of a situation where the cover was by the same guy.

At some point, isnt' that one just implied at the top? Like how the bestselling book lists always just have the Bible at #1 and figure there's nothing interesting about saying so every single week, month, and year, and then just leave it off the list?

I agree about Mac's version being better.

His solo version about made me puke back when it was being overplayed on AM radio.

That would be on the second play. He also dropped a verse that completely changes the meaning and feel of the song.

Except for the fact that Michael Hedges did it better, IMO.

Back when Papa Roach first got signed they did a little promo EP thingy. On it was their version of Alanis Morrisette's "You Ottta Know". I hate Papa Roach, and I hate Alanis, but that is a killer version of the tune.

Little Bit O' Soul and Time Has Come Today- Ramones

Shapes Of Things - Gary Moore

Up Around The Bend - Hanoi Rocks

I love me some Van Morrison covers:

Friday's Child (Los Angeles 9/5/71)

Bring It On Home To Me (Los Angeles 9/5/71)

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (Kansas City 2/17/74)

Everybody's Talking (Los Angeles 2/15/73)

Some of my favorite jazz fusion covers:

Dennis Coffey- Whole Lotta Love

Dennis Coffey- Ride Sally Ride

Overton Berry Trio- Hey Jude

Wes Montgomery- A Day In The Life

Cal Tjader- Morning Mist

Charles Kynard/Bernard Purdie- Something

Ernest Ranglin- Love & Happiness

My favorite dub reggae covers:

Lee Perry- Popcorn

Dub Specialist- Popcorn (titled Greedy G)

I can't think of much else at the moment.

And yes, "All Along The Watchtower" is arguably Jimi's best track, period. If we had a "Favorite Hendrix Song" poll, that one would most likely take the cake.

Anybody here familiar with the covers of Simon and Garfunkle's "America" and the Beatles' "Every Little Thing" that Yes did way back when? Those are both really amazing, back when it was evident that Yes were a bunch of really innovative musicians but before they started taking themselves too seriously.

I think the Beatles version of Buddy Holly's "Words of Love" is one of my favorite cover tunes the early Fabs did.

John Lennon's cover of Ben E. King's classic "Stand By Me" is one of my favorite John solo acoustic guitar-based tracks.

When Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company did "Summertime" that was really a cover of a tune from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, so I'll include that as a favorite.

REM's "Superman" is better than the original by The Clique and the first cover done by Moby Grape.

Currently my favorite covers are all the cool Bowie tunes Sue Jorge does in Portuguese on the Lif Aquatic soundtrack. Listening to that right now.

Great tune, and probably his best from a studio/technical production standpoint. But I'll take Little Wing as my all time fave. I like the Clapton, Stevie ray, and Sting covers of that one, btw.
