I remember when Casino came out it was pretty much considered "O.K." at best, with most people saying it was better when it was known as "Goodfellas". I think they should of made a bigger effort to show us a little from Leo and Matt Damons past and how they got into the situations they were in. That's what I was thinking. Whitaker beating out O'Toole does sound funny...until you see Last King of Scotland. It was a pretty powerful performance. The movie would have sucked without it. As for The Departed, I thought it was mediocre. I loved the first half of it, but the second half seemed silly to me. I thought Letters from Iwo Jima was the most impressive of the bunch. Its unfortunate, because really, he's not such a great director in my view. Probably the most overrated one, though. And Whitaker's performance in Last King of Scotland was truly amazing. I haven't seen the film yet, but anyone who goes to the lenghts Whitaker did for this film is all deserving in my opinion. He gained 50lbs for the role. He fricken learned Swahili. Congrats! See, I think the actors and the acting were much better in Casino. No disrespect to Jack, but Matt Damon's performance almost killed The Departed for me. bmags Posted February 26, 2007 Share Posted February 26, 2007 yeah matt's wasn't great, he relied too much on the fact that he's from boston and i've stated every departed thread how mmuch i hate boston all the movies based in it. But i thought leo was great. I don't think it really mattered that we knew leo's past because he wasn't that person anymore, he was a thug now. I thought watching him of the line from daniel day lewis in the crucible (i'm aware this line should be credited elsewhere towards the writer...was it based off the arthur miller version?) when he says "because it's my name, it's all a man has!".
