The girls robbed a Bank of America branch in an upscale neighborhood in west Cobb County a few minutes after noon on Tuesday. "The pictures are too good," a Cobb County police officer said. "Someone's got to know them." Police released photos of the girls. They look 15 or 16. Jay Dillon, Cobb County schools spokesman, said has talked to principals at two nearby high schools this morning — Harrison and North Cobb. He said neither recognize the girls. He said the youthful bank robbers are the topic of conversation among school staffers. "They are definitely talking about it," Dillon said. "They want to know who they are, whether they are students or not." Police say the girls walked inside the Kroger store at 1720 Mars Hill Road in Acworth about 12:15 p.m. They handed a teller a note demanding cash, smiled as they waited, and made off with an undisclosed amount of loot. What surprised police is that one of the girls appears to be laughing in a bank surveillance camera image — as though "it's all fun and games to them," said Cobb police spokesman Wayne Delk. Clad in casual wear, the girls used as their only disguise a pair of trendy sunglasses. Police hope that will be their undoing. "The pictures are too good," Delk said. "Someone's got to know them." Teenage girls demanding money from bank tellers are rare, but not unheard of. One such robbery occurred in February 2006 in Lima, Ohio, where, according to published reports, a 15-year-old high school freshman was caught after she left behind her bookbag in the getaway car. Cobb police do not know how their teenage bandits got away Tuesday. They barely looked old enough to drive. Police investigate public tips Tips poured into the police today. "We have gotten tons of calls — from 'That's my niece.' 'That's my granddaughter' to 'I know this person from such and such,'" said Delk. He said calls started coming in almost as soon as he released information about the bank robbery Tuesday evening. He said police are following up on leads and hope to have an identification later today. Although there are three high schools nearby — Harrison, Kennesaw Mountain and North Cobb — Delk said police are not going "high school to high school because these girls could be from anywhere." "We are wading through some of the phone calls we are getting to follow-up on the viable leads," Delk said. "We have a few good leads. Our investigators are hoping to develop them." The media is interested too. Delk's media pager started going off at 5:50 a.m. and has not stopped. He's received calls from CNN and Good Morning America. "It's an interesting twist," Delk said. "Banks get robbed quite often, but not by young girls with sunglasses." There are a few different reasons for that, including safety of the tellers, liability for the bank (financial and legal) if something goes badly, insurance requirements, etc. Its cheaper to give them a cash drawer with a few thousand in it than to have one get shot. I'm sure Larry King and Nancy Grace hope the Anna Nicole Smith thing wraps up so they can dedicate multiple shows to these girls. It's going to play out like a parody.
