Is Floyd being groomed for the pen?

I don't know about you guys, but it seems odd to me that John Danks is scheduled to start and go 5, but Floyd is scheduled to only go 3 today in relief work. Now, I would think if Floyd was in the running for the 5th starter spot, he would have started tommorow and get his own 5 innings in against a starting lineup. But that isn't happening, he is getting 3 innings in relief.

Could KW/Oz be grooming Floyd for a relief role, and think Danks, Russel, Haeger are better options as the 5th starter? If Floyd does go to the pen (and would probably make the team also, if he does good today), what will it look like? I read earlier that KW/Oz want Boone Logan on the team. Then we could possibly have Floyd in the pen as a reliever and spot-starter. If so, then there would only be 1 spot left (Jenks, Thornton, MaDougal are locks) Out of Masset, Aardsma, Haeger, and Sisco, I'd choose Masset, but the org. has some fascination with Sisco.

Thoughts?

Remember, this is Danks' second start of Spring Training. Floyd has already had several. It's possible management is grooming him for a relief role, but I'm more willing to bet five innings out of Danks is more important than five out of Floyd. With scheduling issues and other starters to worry about (including Russell tomorrow), perhaps the decision was made without much thought.

Besides, both have their own starts next week.

I think it's going to go down to the wire as to who starter #5 is going to be. Personally, I think they are sold on Floyd, just because of his experience. But, who knows?

I can't remember a spring training in recent years where there were this many roster spots still seriously in play this late (1 week of ST to go) - 2 or 3 in the pen, 1 in the starting five, and 1 position player.

Well, considering tha tout of Haeger and Aardsma, no one has stepped up to take that last bullpen spot, and we have 2 lefties other than Sisco who are pretty much locks...it sure looks like it's coming down to Danks in the rotation and Floyd in the pen, because no one else has bothered to pitch like they want the jobs.

Cross Haegar off of the list for Chicago with his last couple of outings. This is pretty much down to Danks and then Floyd, with Russell lurking if they both blow up again.

Ozzie was quoted today saying his last two outings did not hurt his chances, strangely enough. Link, go to bottom of the article in the notes.

I think they want to give Haeger the benefit of the doubt because he's a knuckleballer in Arizona so they don't want to judge too quickly. I'm guessing they have some way of judging his ability and how it will translate in Chicago.

I believe the climate of Arizona rendered all evaluation of Haeger moot. I also am a backer of the conspiracy theory that McCarthy was traded to create and opening for Haegar. The Sox brass knew that Spring Training would not be pretty for him and if they wanted him over McCarthy there would be no justification for it based on numbers if McCarthy pitched well.

I think they are taking Charlie's last two years in the minors as his guide post. Should someone outperform these numbers they would get a shot. Thus far Danks and Floyd have come close as well as Russell but they all could use a bit more seasoning in AAA. Haegar is an ideal spot starter/long reliever as he is kind of like a softball pitcher when it comes to the recovery time. The thing I do not like about this situation is that our catchers have no shot of defending against a knuckleball (ie see Boston last year). Also, will Chuck be able to perform in the cold weather..........

Last year, they gave him the last start of the Spring, in Hotlanta IIRC, and he came out and pitched well. Anyone know if he's on the schedule in any of the games after they break camp?

Dude, don't worry about that. If it comes to that point, KW will make a last second trade to reacquire Chris Stewart. He'll be jetted into Chicago and get a police escort to the park to catch Haeger's start. Trust me, I know how these things work.

Didn't people here say last year that Stewart actually didn't catch Haeger all that much?

its a good question. IN the paper today it said Ozzie wants Boone to be our long guy and start stretching himself out for that role, so who knows.

Jesus Christ, I'm waiting for Ozzie to manage something correctly for once. Logan is a LOOGY, you use him again lefties only, he's not a longman.

On a sidenote. I know that a LOOGY is a lefty reliever who's main role is to get left-handed hitters out, but I have never heard what exactly L.O.O.G. (and maybe 'y') stand for. Someone enlighten me if you can

Yeah supposedly thats what we ALL saw in him. Of course considering he has been equally effective vs lefties and righties this ST and he has shown that he can pitch for over 1 inning, its not out of the question to think he could be a middle reliever.

Everything about Boone points to LOOGY though. His delivery is deceptive but especially to a left hand hitter, the angle he's coming at will kill lefties but gives a pretty decent view of the ball to righties and even his stuff screams LOOGY, his little 92 MPH fastball isn't exactly going to blow hitters away but that paired with an ok slider against a left handed hitter should be more than enough to get by with. There's nothing about Boone that screams long man but a whole lot that screams LOOGY.

And who in the hell uses a competent lefty reliever as a long man? Those are hard enough to find, I don't see the use in wasting him as your go to guy in blowouts when you have much better candidates for the job and a few open spots (Masset, Haeger and Floyd).

Wow. I wouldn't have guessed it at all, although with the way the pen is set up, Haegar could be a huge change of pace guy.

Yeah, that's kind of why I'm hoping for him in the pen. Not just to keep Aardvark out, but because I think Haeger would be a great piece in a bullpen with 4 or 5 flamethrowers. The idea of squeezing Haeger between one our starters and one of the three coffin nailers (Thronton, MMac and Jenks) is just too awesome.

I saw Haeger pitch in Atlanta last year - he did look pretty good. His line was ok (4-2/3, 5 H, 3 Runs, 1 earned with 2 BB and 5 K's) considering 3 Sox errors in his 4-2/3. Though the box score lineup for Atlanta is screwed up, I remember many of the Atlanta regulars were in the starting lineup for at least a few innings (meaning Haeger was facing legit major leaguers for a good part of his outing).

I'm going again this year and my brother is even flying in from Chicago to go. Has anyone heard who might be pitching this time?
