SN Report: Sox Trade Jimenez to Reds for Minor Leaguer

By Jason Gage

Opening day second-baseman, D’Angelo Jimenez, was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league reliever Scott Dunn on Sunday. Jimenez, 25, was designated for assignment after the Sox acquired Roberto Alomar and Carl Everett, giving the Sox 10 days to trade him.

Dunn is a 25-year-old AA-pitcher who has spent the season with the Chattanooga Lookouts. This season, Dunn, who has seen time as a starter, has worked as a reliever.

In 31 games, Dunn is 3-2 with a 3.79 ERA and eight saves in 40 1/3 innings. Dunn has struck out 54 while walking 16, while holding opponents to a .211 average (31 hits). Dunn was a 10th round pick out of the University of Texas in 1999.

The Reds are expected to use Jimenez, who batted .255 with seven homers and 26 RBIs in 73 games this season, as a utility man where he will see time at third base, second base and shortstop.

Dunn will likely report to the Birmingham Barons (AA) where he may replace recently traded Royce Ring as the closer.

Scouting Report:

Dunn, who possesses a mid-90's fastball and a plus knuckle-curve, needs to work on his control to become a true prospect. This season the Reds saw a big improvement on his control and it's a big reason why he's now being considered a legit prospect. In addition to working on control, Dunn needs to work on developing his secondary pitches.

Stats:

2003 (Chattanooga-AA): 3-2, 3.79 ERA, 8 SV, 40.1 INN, 31 H, 54 K, 16 BB

2002 (Chattanooga-AA): 5-7, 3.92 ERA, 1 SV, 110.1 INN, 99 H, 114 K, 54 BB

2001 (Chattanooga-AA): 7-2, 4.12 ERA, 98.1 INN, 96 H, 87 K, 71 BB

2001 (Mudville-A): 5-3, 2.11 ERA, 59.2 INN, 73 K, 31 BB

2000 (Clinton-A): 11-3, 3.96 ERA, 147.2 INN, 123 H, 159 K, 89 BB

1999 (Billings-R): 1-3, 4.31 ERA, 39.2 INN, 36 H, 36 K, 24 BB

Not all that old for AA actually, he progressed fast and kind of stuck in AA, I think he has a chance, better stuff coming to us than most of last years guys who have done well, like Pacheco, Meaux, Francisco, An. Gotta like our scouts odds.

Mr. Show ... I finally have to ask ... who is the girl on your sig line, is that Pam Anderson?

Back to reality ... this guy Dunn appears to have turned the corner this year. My brother in law is a Chattanooga Lookouts season tix holder and a big Reds fan, and he is PISSED they traded him for Jimenez. He said Dunn's major problem was control coming into this year, and he appears to have harnessed it. His other comment was "you guys have picked up a guy who can be a good set-up guy as soon as next year."

Sweet...glad to know your bro thinks we did well. Looking at his stats I think the same, but its always better when first hand people like a guy.

PLEASE SAY THIS ISN'T THE TRADE THAT'S SUPPOSED TO "BLOW OUR MINDS" ?

It was suppose to be the big trade, but once again KW got the names mixed up. He thought he was getting ADAM Dunn. In all seriousness it was a decent move. At least we got something for Jimenez. It sounds like Dunn is similar to Almonte(as far as progress and age) with better stuff.
