Then you need to study Russia a little better, becase the KGB has their own set of interests seperate from either Medvedev OR Putin (thoughly obviously at times in concert).

Not really, because I'm referring to John McCain's reiterated phrase where he'd say "I looked into his eyes and saw K.G.B." and then smile showing how tough on the cold war he was.

thanks for the accusation though! Come again!

You were referring to a John McCain quote? Weird. Sorry I wasn't privy to your inside joke.

It was a pretty covered topic and quote during Georgia/Russia conflict.

condescension welcome though.

edit: I easily could have just referred to Putin's KGB career to justify it, as well.

OK well, before this gets too snarky, I apologize for being condescending, which my post was.

Where do people get these kinds of ideas? (rhetorical question, I know the answer) This is from a facebook chat I had earlier. This is what happens when you listen to too much talk radio, he honestly believes that all liberals are disgusting pieces of s***, and since he has observed that I'm not one, that I can't possibly be a liberal.

Him

why do you consider your self a lib?

6:49pm Me

complicated answer

but

as a general statement w/o getting too far into the nitty gritty i believe in equal opportunity for everyone and social freedom

6:51pm Him

You've served in the Military, You're Married, you have kids. Those are all Conservative American Family Values. You are the opposite of the Liberal Ideal.

6:53pm Him

Liberal ideas are "Humans are causing global warming, no more Children, only Abortion." and "Marriage is a Christian thing, no Marriage, everyone live in Freedom from Christianity! no religion." and " the Military is a bunch of cold blooded murders, no Guns! PEACE!" and blah blah blah...

6:53pmKeith

not really, all those are stereotypes to be honest. you probably get that

from TV

i don't know anyone like that

weed-smoking hippies who burn american flags at pro-communist rallies and who make secret islamic pacts to destroy america.

6:55pmJachin

Equal Opportunity for everyone? that is a Free Market Capitalist Idea. - When Liberal Politician takes hard working Americans Tax payer dollars and give it as a GOVT handout to some one simply for their Skin color, that's completely UNFAIR.

6:56pmKeith

equal opportunity would be giving everyone an education

making sure kids are taken care of to the extent possible, have food to eat etc.

not handouts unless you count someone needing unemployment for a couple of years while they get themselves together. people abuse the system but not everyone

6:58pmKeith

as an adult, for the most part it's all about the individual, and not interfering with how he/she lives their life if they don't hurt anybody else

You're more "conservative" then you allow yourself to admit. But the guy's a moron to say what he said.

I know that I'm pretty close to the line but what puts me to the left of center is where I see the role of government. I used to be about where Balta is and I moved to the right a few steps. The poor guy though, he means well. I can tell he gets all of his information almost exclusively from talk radio and prime-time opinion shows on Fox. He told me that Reagan always balanced the budget and when I told him Reagan never had any balanced budgets he said it was because the Democrats earmarked it all. lol.

the last line in that chat is somewhere where I firmly agree with conservatives. But it's not in contradiction to some basic liberal ideas either.

Interesting reader email from Sullivan's blog...

Of course they are screaming 'socialism'. They've been doing that since the 50s at least. They're not talking about economic redistribution of wealth - they never have been. They've been talking about redistribution of privilege this whole time. They called MLK a communist because he wanted blacks to have the same rights as whites, and to them that was a redistribution of the privilege that whites had 'earned'.

In their view, white, Christian, heterosexuals have earned something that gays, non-Christians, and non-heteros have failed to work hard enough at. It's been a class war from the outset, just not one based around income or net worth - mostly because the whites in the south were economically pretty bad off and blacks in the north were catching up to them.

This picture shows they were pushing the same buttons half a century ago that they are today. Anti-christ, communism - it's all the same as it is today and is well known code. It's why the protesters will decry socialism today but wouldn't have under Bush - it's all tied to race and other social objectives and has nothing really to do with taxation, deficits, and big government. You probably missed it when you came to the US, but this is pretty old game - particularly to guys like Carter that grew up around it.

Not sure what that means.

It means that you are taking the motivations of some % of a group, and applying it to all of them. Its called stereotyping, or if used against a specific class or race of people, its called bigotry. Something I'm pretty sure you'd say is bad. But the author, with your apparent agreement, is doing just that. Ironically, the very picture he used is a perfect illustration of stereotyping and unfounded categorization, the exact thing he is supposedly railing against.

"the cause" is not racism or class warfare - it is simply the motivation for SOME of those people.

I meant the royal "you", but, do you agree with the writer here or not?

To some extent. I wouldn't paint with a broad brush but when you go to a rally and stand next to someone holding a sign like the one in that photo, I have to wonder what kind of person you are.
