SOXOBAMA 0 Posted January 5, 2009 I got a text from a very close friend that said. Paul White was on XM radio and reported that the Sox will be signing Pedro Martinez and Brandon Lyon by the end of the week. Can anyone else confirm this report. I'm stuck at work
thedoctor 65 Posted January 5, 2009 i like this idea only because the thought of marquez and richard rounding out the rotation makes me ill.
NorthSideSox72 401 Posted January 5, 2009 Pedro Martinez???? What's his health status right now?
thedoctor 65 Posted January 5, 2009 QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 05:25 PM) Pedro Martinez???? What's his health status right now? tenuous.
rangercal 0 Posted January 5, 2009 I like Pedro as a 50-100 ip starter. Nothing more.
SoxFan562004 47 Posted January 5, 2009 If Pedro is reasonable money I would have no problem with it. The Sox are a big payroll team that shed some payroll, they are in the position to roll the dice with someone like Pedro or an Andruw Jones
shipps 504 Posted January 5, 2009 Pedro's health is about as stable as Freddy Garcia's.
sircaffey 0 Posted January 5, 2009 Pedro will take Contreras' place on the DL. The Sox probably look at Pedro/Jose being 1 SP with Marquez/Richard/Poreda being 1 SP as well. I like the thought.
SOXOBAMA 0 Posted January 5, 2009 I just hope if we do sign Pedro, he has at least one good year left in his arm. What was the deal with Lyon in AZ..
Dick Allen 5,797 Posted January 5, 2009 QUOTE (thedoctor @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 12:24 PM) i like this idea only because the thought of marquez and richard rounding out the rotation makes me ill. You apparently haven't watched Pedro recently.
longshot7 27 Posted January 5, 2009 Lyon had 26 saves last year but with a 4.70 ERA. 07 was his best year, posting a 2.68 ERA in 74 innings.
Steve9347 243 Posted January 5, 2009 He hasn't been worthwhile in 3 years.
thedoctor 65 Posted January 5, 2009 QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 06:45 PM) You apparently haven't watched Pedro recently. not saying either pedro or lyon are great at this point, but there ought to be veteran competition for those spots.
Hatchetman 121 Posted January 5, 2009 this seems kind of dubious since the most logical thing for him to do would be to throw in front of scouts to show his arm is ok.
Brian 131 Posted January 5, 2009 Lyon would make our bullpen nasty. I'd take him in a second. Pedro, eh. If it is an incentive type deal, cool. If we don't sign him, no biggie to me.
Dick Allen 5,797 Posted January 5, 2009 If you don't like Dotel, you will absolutely hate Lyon.
flavum 1,640 Posted January 5, 2009 I'd think of Pedro much like El Duque in 2005. You know you're not going to get 32 starts from him, but if you get a good 15-20 starts, then he's be more valuable than a bunch of young guys.
Balta1701 5,416 Posted January 5, 2009 QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 10:28 AM) If you don't like Dotel, you will absolutely hate Lyon. It depends on the role they're put in. Dotel as a 7th inning guy...ok. Dotel as an 8th/9th inning guy, ick. Lyon as a 7th inning guy with Dotel hanging around, along with the 2 Loogy's, leading in to Linebrink/Jenks...pretty nasty. Lyon as the 8th inning guy before Jenks or before someone else...worrisome.
flavum 1,640 Posted January 5, 2009 Lyon would be a nice pickup..certainly a lot more reliable than Russell, Jimenez, or Wassermann. The chances of Linebrink and Dotel making it through this season without injuries would be low too. I like the idea of another veteran arm. Anyone confirm these rumors? sircaffey 0 Posted January 5, 2009 Brandon just had a horrible 2nd half last year. Something was off... Pre: 37.0 IP, 35 H, 7 BB, 28 K, 2.43 ERA, 1.14 WHIP Post: 22.1 IP, 40 H, 6 BB, 16 K, 8.46 ERA, 2.06 WHIP I'd be very happy if the Sox signed him.

BigSqwert 50 Posted January 5, 2009 Pedro? I'd pass. Would be nice to occasionally get a big name guy at least remotely close to his prime and not 5 years afterward.
HuskyCaucasian 0 Posted January 5, 2009 QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 11:20 AM) Pedro Martinez and Brandon Lyon by the end of the week. Totally misread that the first time. i must be still in Bear mood. Swore you said Brandon Lloyd. And I thought, "hell, he sucks at football. Might give baseball a shot."
