White Sox 2009: Jayson Nix

SoxNet.net

Signed to a minor league contract, not a whole lot was to be expected of Jayson Nix. After losing his starting job with the Rockies just 22 games into the '08 season, Nix was back in AAA and at 26 years old, far from prospect territory. But he may found life and a role with a White Sox, if not another chance to start.

Battling Chris Getz in spring training for the starting nod at second, Nix took himself out of the running with a strained quad injury, which landed him on the 15-day disabled list to start the season. Ironically enough, it was...Rest of the Article

I like this part

There will be plenty of debating this off-season on whether Nix should be starting over Getz. His range and power are nice. But in the end, all you have is a .224 hitter that can't hit righties and swings for the longball enough times to connect on 12 while striking out at a pace that would top 120 over a full season worth of playing time. He's a great option off the bench and nice insurance for second, but nothing more until he proves otherwise.

That describes perfectly what I feel Nix is.

I'm not crazy bout Nix as a starter, but as you said he's a decent bench guy.

If he is our starter, we're in trouble.

Not really because at worst we'd have a defensive specialist at a very weak offensive position. Everyone always complains about how we don't play any defense and then when we do get a great defender who is also at least as good offensively as the next best option, you all just want to cast him aside.

Makes sense to me too.

I'll spot you Brian Anderson and Juan Uribe, both of whom were terrible offensive players. Name me another defensive specialist Sox fans wanted to cast aside whose offensive ability wasn't embarrassing at least?

Defensive specialist? Nix may be slightly better than Getz, but that doesn't make him anywhere near the defensive ability of Uribe or Anderson.

And just as easily as you can talk about fans always complaining about the poor defense, you can also bring up fans complaining about all-or-nothing swings, which is what Nix is all about. Goes both ways.

Nix is better then Getz on both offense and defense. Getz will hit for a better average, with less power and less of an ability to get on base. Getz was really, below-average last year, but hell he's a grinder so let's give him the benefit of the doubt. The double standard on expectations that some people have between Nix and Getz baffles me. Getz proves himself a hard-nosed player with limited offense and defense skills, and he's our future lead-off man. Nix hits a dozen homeruns, and plays great defense, and he needs to be begging for a job.

Apparently the entire organization disagrees with you, along with the vast majority of fans.

Defense? No question. Nix is better. But offense? Getz really has him there in every facet besides power. Just check out their minor league lines -

Getz - .286/.362/.380, 168BB/143K over 5 seasons. He averaged 72 walks to 61K's per 162 games.

Nix - .261/.332/.415, 302BB/675K over 9 seasons. He averaged 56 walks to 126 K's per 162 games.

Getz made contact on 88.7% of pitches he swung at this season, Nix only made contact on 78%.

Getz hits for a higher average, strikes out less and walks more than Nix. He doesn't have the power that Nix does, but he can hit both righties and lefties, something Nix can't.

I have no problem with being in the minority of opinions. I like Chris Getz, but when every reputable metric points to Jayson Nix being the better player, I can’t help but be swayed in one direction over the other. In the end, I don’t think either is the ideal option. Hell, I’d kill for CJ Retherford to win the job, but if defensive really is a priority for this team then Nix is your guy.

Every reputable metric?

Please list them.

UZR for one season? Which means absolutely nothing... andddd... what else?

I am rapidly coming to the opinion that Jayson Nix is the new Brian Anderson for Sox fans.

Which makes me fell kinda weird, because I was one of this site's biggest "develop Anderson" backers, and in this case I think Getz is the guy with the best chance of being a long-term piece.

It's got to be the home run power he showed, which is weird cause our fan base seems to be more in the mold of wanting less power, more speed and all that. Not that Nix is a plodder.

I hope the Sox give Getz one more year to prove he can or can't be a great starter. If not, we should go a different direction. Make Nix or Getz the backup to some stud if Getz can't hack it.
