But remember he is a '07 draft pick that is still in A-Ball. Granted, he has had several season ending injuries. Bachanov was a risk, let's see how far it takes him.

Also remember Bachanov was drafted out of high school in '07and is still only 22.

Did anyone catch the Danny Mac show around 10 today? The Charlotte radio announcer was on and was giving his thoughts about Viciedo (saying "he's ready). When asked who else is catching his eye, he mentioned De Aza, that his numbers have surpassed what he did all of last year, Danks' defense that he can go get anything, and Tyler Flowers' eye as far as OBP and his selective/working the count development. Good stuff.

For the third time this year, C.J. Retherford has been released. This time by the Detroit organization.

C.J. Just signed with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks (American Association)

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks made a pair of moves today, signing 3B C.J. Retherford to a contract and releasing 3B Brian Ruggiano. Retherford will be in uniform tonight as the RedHawks continue a four-game series against the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, MN.

Retherford, 25, has played 46 games this year at the Double-A level with the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers organizations. He has spent the previous four seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization and split time at both Birmingham of the Southern League (AA) and Charlotte of the International League (AAA) in 2010. Retherford batted .200 with 14 doubles, three home runs, 28 RBI and 34 runs scored in 79 games at Birmingham and hit .201 with seven doubles, four home runs, 13 RBI and ten runs scored in 44 games for Charlotte last season.

Retherford was signed by the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent in 2007 after completing his college career at Arizona State University. He was a Carolina League (A) All-Star in 2008 with Winston-Salem and a Southern League All-Star with Birmingham in 2009.

Ruggiano appeared in all 44 games for Fargo-Moorhead this season and batted .209 with nine doubles, one home run and 15 RBI.

Another year comes and goes and we spend nothing in international free agents. So we don't go over slot and we spend nothing in international. Then get confused when our minor leagues are a bit thin.

I don't think anyone is confused by it.

Can someone please give me a refresher course of what happened to Kyle Bellamy this year? Is he hurt?

All I know is that he was put on the 60 day DL at the end of March. Guessing a major arm injury or arm surgery.

They always spend something... just nothing significant enough to have been reported by Baseball America.

We just saw four or five guys come in from the DSL into Rookie ball.

Just because they came to America from the DSL doesn't mean they have superb talent. There is a reason we haven't produced a homegrown Latin American player (minus Cubans) since Magglio (or maybe it's CLee).

I'd say DLS counts. He didn't reach AA with the Sox, but he was starting. He's now a reliever. He already had big league relief stuff with the Sox. He even survived a surgery.

Another International Signing Day and the Sox are making no additions. Great.

Since when has any talent come out of Latin America? The Sox don't need to waste lots of money on those guys. They go after the more cost effective types like Jake Peavy, Adam Dunn and Alex Rios.

Viciedo is Sickels' prospect of the day.

Cuban slugger Dayan Viciedo has been named to the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star Futures Game on July 10th, playing for the World Team. The White Sox signed him out of Cuba in 2008 for a major league contract worth $10 million. It took him some time to adapt to North America, but he's ripping the ball for Triple-A Charlotte this year, earning the All-Star honor.

Viciedo began his pro career by hitting .280/.317/.391 with 12 homers for Double-A Birmingham in 2009. This was considered somewhat disappointing, with less power than anticipated, but he was just 20 years old. He improved in the power department in 2010, hitting .274/.308/.493 in 86 games for Charlotte, then .308/.321/.519 in a 38-game, 104 at-bat trial with the White Sox. He's been excellent this year for Charlotte, hitting .329/.369/.530 in 78 games.

In 164 career Triple-A games, Viciedo has hit .300/.338/.511 with 33 homers, 39 doubles, 29 walks, and 138 strikeouts in 699 plate appearances.

Viciedo is a big guy at 5-11, 230. A right-handed hitter, he has outstanding raw power and has tapped into his physical strength more effectively over the last year. He crushes fastballs and has power to all fields, giving him a good chance to hit for a high average. He has made progress improving his reads on breaking pitches, but while his plate discipline is still a weakness, he's shown the willingness to make adjustments and learn from his mistakes. Given his age, his upside is huge.

Viciedo's biggest problem is defense. He has a strong throwing arm, but washed out as a third baseman and is just mediocre at first base. The White Sox are playing him primarily in right field at Charlotte, with results that can be described generously as mediocre. In the long run he'll probably be a DH who can fill in at first base or a corner outfield spot in an emergency.

Despite his defensive limits, Viciedo's bat makes him a player to watch very closely. If his offense develops as the White Sox hope, he could make future Major League All-Star games, in addition to minor league ones.
