Smith needed a push. He should probably be pushing for a spot in AA to start next year.

That's my thought as well. His defense is reported to be solid, and he's hitting A- pitching fairly well, but he's old for level. If he can hit in AA, he may jump up the prospect charts.

I'm less concerned with age for catches, but I think it was time to move him up.

BTW, that Kannapolis roster is starting to get ugly. I think we'll see several guys from Bristol, at least Hawkins and Barnum, make the jump straight to full season ball next year. Not much position playing talent on Great Falls' roster.

There are a couple position players at GF that are a little interesting to me: Justin Jirschele and Micah Johnson. But that's about it, and Jirschele is an NDFA and probably won't keep it up in A ball.

Micah Johnson should be the starting 2B for Kannapolis next year. I really think Hawkins will be in CF and Barnum will be at 1B. Other than that, nothing would surprise me. I could even see them push Ayala, since they drafted two high school catchers this year.

Yeah, most of the exciting prospects on Kanny have been moved up. Winston-Salem will be in the playoffs so that's good and could be one of the reasons why we're seeing the promotions.

Usually the high draft picks go to Kanny straight away to give them better experience so Hawkins and Barnum would likely go there along with Beck and the top college picks. Basto (5th round) might stay in extended since he's struggling in rookie ball now.

Looks like Charlotte is going with a 6 man rotation as of right now. Shirek, Hernandez, Zaleski, Axelrod, Castro, Leesman.

Which means someone at the major league level or Charlotte is getting traded.

And Beck could move quickly...

Maybe. Zaleski is filler and that's it, so, they may just be using him to help manage the other guys' innings.

At no time was Bellamy ever thought of as a Top 10 pick.

He was at one time ranked as high as #12 in the Sox system by FutureSox (in 2010). Surgery in 2011 is what knocked him off the radar. 2012 is a recovery year for him, getting stretched back out. 2013 will be the year that dictates if he still has a major league future. But at this point, he's off the radar, probably in the 30-40 range in the system.

Before Beck added all of the muscle and regressed, teams were looking at him at a top 10 pick in the entire draft.

True. But he was thought to be a relatively advanced specialist who could move through the organization quickly.

Problem is he's been plagued by control issues. And a reliever with control issues.... not going to hit too many top prospect lists.

Seems like he has a mental block about pitching in Birmingham. I'd try moving him up to Charlotte. No reason to move him back to high-A... he's dominated twice there... but can't find the plate in Birmingham.

He hasn't been fully healthy either time in AA. He got injured the first time around and probably pitched through it at first. Now he's working his way back and may not be 100%. I wouldn't label it a mental block until we know the injury isn't at work. I'm not rating him in the top 30 prospects or anything, but he still has a chance.

There will be a trade soon...too many guys in the organization. Half of Charlottes staff has thrown in the majors this year some with success others not. Gotta get something for those guys. We would have a pretty good staff today with the people we traded away...Gonzales, Hudson, Richard to name a few. Kenny likes to pick up older washed up guys with big names. If we don't get Grienke look out...

He so much as admitted on his Twitter that missing a year has created an uphill climb for him.

Keenan Walker (shoulder) and Marcus Semien (knee laceration) go on the DL. Billy Rice and D.J. Jarrad move up to Winston-Salem. Simon Castro goes back on the DL and Pedro Hernandez goes on the temporary inactive list. Charlotte goes from 6 starting pitchers to 4. Nevin Griffith goes back into the Barons rotation, but they still only have 4 starters.

Slight possibility that Tyler Saladino has been promoted to Charlotte. Not likely Carlos Sanchez, but maybe Erik Morrison. It's going to be one of those three.

Greg Paiml ‏@GP_3

Got picked up by the White Sox, looks like I'm going to be a Birmingham Baron again

Looks like this man will be joing the Barons, kudos to JoeCoolMan
