DeAza's one of the few guys in that age range, and he started playing when he was 15 or 16 in the Dodgers' system, so he has a little bit more wear and tear on him because of his style of play and how many seasons he's been a pro, but he's still as close as you get to a player at the very top of his game, career-wise. danman31 Posted June 6, 2012 Share Posted June 6, 2012 So far the only interesting picks today are Sammy Ayala in the 17th round and Jason Coats in the 29th. Ayala is a HS catcher with some raw ability and athleticism (three-sport athlete). He's committed to UC Santa Barbara and would likely be an overslot sign. Coats was a guy BA said had a chance to be a first round pick last year after breaking a TCU record with 99 hits as a sophomore. He posted big numbers that year and had a good showing at the Cape Cod League the following summer, but posted an OPS in the low .800s the last couple years. His stock has slipped quite a bit. The unsigned senior has been especially strong this spring, going 4-1 with two no-decisions thus far. He has pitched a total of 37 innings with 49 strikeouts and 9 walks. He is holding opponents to a .203 batting average and has yielded 8 earned runs. Jon has also helped himself out offensively, leading the team in RBI with 21 and hitting .300 on the season. And it was in the 30's rounds. Anyone else noticing the school repeats? I suppose it is natural, you can only visit so many schools and players... but you'd think in the modern age of technology, you could diversify a bit. Here are some repeat schools so far: Arizona State: 2 New Mexico State: 2 Delta State: 2 Archbishop McCarthy HS: 2 ASU is a pretty serious baseball progam... but are Delta State and NMSU? That happens a lot with every team. Scouts go to look at one specific player on a team and then another player always catches their eye and they keep tabs. Just the way it works.
