Very cool stuff boys. Not getting excited yet but it's cool to be involved.

Of course, anything from bucket or Rock would be wonderful about now. I worked 10-7 today and read the last 15 pages only to see that Heyman called the Sox and Cubs front runners and a bunch of posters talked about their dicks.

If the sox land Tanaka do you move Johnson + to the astros for Castro? seeing how you can slot in Rienzo or Paulino in the 5th spot with Beck a stones throw away and a possible #3 pick of Rodon or Hoffman on the fast track?

I do that deal no matter what happens

But my God, we'd look pretty strong and nearly rebuilt at least on paper; bolded areas would look pretty weak ATM but trading Alexei, DeAza, Paulino, Lindstrom, and Belisario could help strengthen those spots a bit.

Sale-Tanaka-Quintana-Danks-Beck/Danish/Draft Pick/Other

C Castro

1B Abreu

DH Viciedo

2B Beckham/Semien/Sanchez/Johnson

3B Eaton

SS Leury/Semien/Sanchez

LF ????

CF Eaton

RF Avisail

1B/3B/corner OF Gillaspie

IF UT/CF Leury

C Phegley/Nieto

OF Jordan Danks

CL Jones

RSU Webb

LSU Veal/Leesman/Other

MR Petricka

MR Bassit/Other

Lefty specialist Leesman/Veal/Other

LR Rienzo

Edit: that last SP really doesn't look too weak at all but I bolded that out since those guys are probably 1+ years away; maybe Beck moves pretty quick & Danish could be here now if we wanted him in the pen, but as a starter he'll probably take a little bit of time.

^All those guys aren't going to pan out, but I was just thinking, if we get really lucky and Eaton stays healthy & is a productive CF, Semien is a quality 2B, and Mich Johnson makes it as a LF, that's one pretty nice looking 9-1-2 in terms of speed and contact.

I did read somewhere ( I think an article on the Sox site a few months ago) that Micah could be moved to the outfield due to his speed and suspect defense at second. It still leaves Leury, Sanchez and Semien to fill open holes with Anderson hopefully ready down the line too.

For now I wouldn't trade a starter til we know what we have between Johnson, Surkamp and Rienzo to fill out the 5th spot.

Just sign tanaka already. I gotta bust a nut and get ready for the '14 season!!

Should we issue a flash flood warning because you won't be the only one busting a nut?

Edit: Rock, where are you? Info is needed before the flood begins prematurely.

You forgot Scott Downs in your trade list, although the return will be marginal.

Change 3B to Davidson.

That bullpen sucks. (Yes, I know, someone like Danish will emerge as a stud out there...and we've got three veterans in front of them for the moment, along with Paulino possibly as well).

Just wanted to post the latest out of Japan. Nothing new but here it is anyways.

Masahiro Tanaka updates from Saturday, January 18, 2014.

Tanaka closed out his workouts in the Kanto region on Friday and left for Sendai on a shinkansen in the evening. [sponichi 1/18/2014]

Tanaka worked out at Kobo Stadium today for the first time this year.  He tossed a bullpen session using an MLB baseball and told reporters it felt normal.  Tanaka did not make any comments about where he might be playing this year. [sponichi 1/18/2014] ... Tanaka tossed thirty pitches to a standing catcher.  He mixed in his curve, slider, two-seamer, and splitter. [Daily Sports 1/18/2014]

Angels Owner Art Moreno told reporters Tanaka was a pitcher they wanted, but there was also a budget they had to consider. [sponichi 1/18/2014]

Cubs Manager Rick Renteria was part of the group that met with Tanaka when he was in Los Angeles.  The group also included President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein, General Manager Jed Hoyer.  Renteria said he planned to purchase the Rosetta Stone to learn some Japanese. [sponichi 1/18/2014]

According to the New York Post, Tanaka met with seven teams during his stay in Los Angeles. [New York Post 1/16/2014]

A number of teams, which could include the Yankees, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, White Sox, and Cubs, submitted formal contract offers to Tanaka up through to the 16th US time (17th Japan time).  Almost all teams probably submitted nine-figure deals at six years. [Nikkan Sports 1/18/2014]

ESPN's Jayson Stark tweet: In non-replay news, amazing how many owners in Ariz. were convinced #Cubs are ready to blow away the field & sign Tanaka to a monster deal. [Tweet 1/17/2014 via Nikkan Sports 1/18/2014]

The N. Y. taxes must be a big consideration for players. What is the after tax equivalent amount the Yankees would have to pay to match a White Sox offer of $20 Million for 7 years (opt out after 4)?

Here is how to not show the kind of respect Japanese culture values:

Referring to Mr. Tanaka as a "valuable commodity" is not a good first step.

I'd love to know exactly how that translates in Japanese. If it connotes anything like "valuable piece of meat", the Cubs chances might have taken a pretty good hit, with that tactless remark.

Taisetsu no hito 大切の人 or taisetsu no mono 大切の物. = Valuable person/thing

It translates properly.

Thanks for the clarification.

Epstein was probably just lucky. I doubt that he knew it wouldn't translate as bad as it sounds in English. "Commodity" certainly isn't the best English word to use, if the intention is to show respect.

Most Americans wouldn't think anything of it, but I understand that Japanese culture is quite different.
