Other than the fact that the Sox would then be major league shortstop-less, yes. It isn't an easy position to fill. Even the organizations that are always listed as the best systems, STL, TB, are always throwing retreads in to fill that position. If you have a good one, trading them, unless it is a crazy haul, is very dangerous.

Besides, if Stephen Drew is available for money and a 3rd or 4th rounder, it has to be less than what it would take to get Alexei.

SS can also be overrated. The Red Sox have won 3 World Series since 2004. In those 10 years, they have started 9 different shortstops.

Of course, a notable counterpoint is the Yankees having won 5 world series since 1995 and in those years they started 1 shortstop.

I won't mind if the Beckham oblique queers any Cervelli deal. Just seems like a treading-water move and does not excite. I'd like to see Marcus play nothing but 2B at Charlotte for the near term - looks like he could use some refinement there, based on last night's observations.

Hahn spoke to the media yesterday, and hinted that if they were going to trade for a catcher, it would have to be a long term solution--meaning probably not Cervelli, who is in his late 20's and not really a starter type.

Speaking of Hahn, he'll be on the Score at 11:30.

All you have to do is look at the deals that Hahn has made since June of last year to know how he is going to operate. He isn't as interested in marginal upgrades and short term fixes as Kenny was. Eaton, Davidson, Abreu, Garcia are all under control for 5-6 years.

He was on a season ticketholder conference call Thursday and said he wasn't interested in a short term catching solution this winter but said if there isn't enough improvement that will be re-assessed.

He really wanted McCann.

Of course, a notable counterpoint, is during the span the Red Sox won 3 World Series with a different SS every year, the Yankees only one won while having the same SS.
